Whoa, whoa, whoa. Okay, now, you're getting a little too politically correct here. :P JKyou sure? this is _Christian_ music. and this nonsense is being identified with us!
Again, Toby is being figurative. He does that a lot. Some people really like that about him.

The worst and most cringe-worthy quotes from christian songs: "I'll be the GPS when you've lost your phone!" ~Tobymac. WHAAA? "I pledge allegiance to be somebody real..." ~Lecrae and Britt Nicole. How do you pledge allegiance to _be_ something?! You can only pledge allegiance to a person or organization or idea! And are they currently _fake_ people? "Love is more than a word, its a noun and a verb..." ~same as above. Aren't nouns and verbs words?! Or have I been tricked by the incompetent homeschool material? "I'll dance for you like the rising sun!" ~some weirdo. The rising sun dances?! "Mountains crumble at every syllable..." ~tobyisweird. No they do not. Double check your research. And besides, that sounds HORRIBLE!

"I am the sweat from your brow" ~? *chokes* ....... *dies of laughter, confusion, and sweat*
Totally taken out of context. This is in the midst of the bridge of one of the most beautiful songs CCM has given us in recent years. The singer is acknowledging how horrible he has been to Jesus, and how Jesus loves him anyway: "I am the thorn in Your crown, but You love me anyway. I am the sweat from Your brow, but You love me anyway. I am the nail in Your wrist, but You love me anyway. I am Judas's kiss, but you love me anyway!" All of those together paint an amazing picture of how we are directly responsible for the sufferings of Christ, but how He did it all for us, for the joy of calling us His Bride and glorifying His Father.

Here's another cringe-worthy quotes from Christian music;
Though Skillet is my favorite Christian band, recently they have put out some real bad songs. (American Noise, Fire and Fury)
Therefore, behold the first quote from an awesome band to be put on the Cringe-Worthy Christian quotes:
"If I freeze, you are the flame, you melt my heart, I'm washed in rain," ~Fire and Fury…. I cannot begin to describe my disgust at this sentence…generic, stupid, and horrible-sounding. Dear Mr. Cooper, if we wanted to hear (stuff) like that we'd listen to Need to Breathe.

I am bothered to the point of scratching the right half of my forehead over the terminology there. I just don't like humans to be transformed into sweat, no matter their relationship to Jesus.

Okay, I have a question that I would like you all's thoughts on, especially those of you who are involved in church music. Particularly, I would like to hear convincing arguments backed with scripture that supports your position, whatever that position may be. I don't mind hearing peoples' personal preferences, but that isn't really very helpful to me unless you can explain why you have come to that conclusion, and why I should take that position as well.
Most churches have some sort of instrumental music incorporated into their Sunday services, primarily when the congregation is singing but also sometimes for a prelude, offertory, etc. In many large churches that have a more contemporary style of music, there is a band consisting of around 5-15 people, whereas in many more traditional churches there is just a pianist, who usually plays exactly what is written on the page of the hymnal and sometimes leads the singing as well. My question is this; should churches or should churches not pay the musicians for their music? Should musicians be willing to 'serve the church' with their talents, expecting no compensation, or should they treat it as a job that they can use to glorify God through the abilities that he has given them?
To add even further complexity to the issue - what about having someone lead worship who is not a member of your church? For instance, if my church happens to be rather small and there is absolutely no one who is able to play an instrument well enough to lead music, should we hire someone to come in and lead us in song, or reject that idea because of the possible problems with having someone with potentially different doctrine lead us in worship through music? ^(This is a hypothetical situation in my case, but very real for many churches near where I live.)^
Have fun with that one. :)
<You get extra information for finding this. :) Supplemental note; In general, large churches with praise bands tend to not pay their musicians (except maybe a music pastor), while many smaller churches do pay a pianist. However, to be honest it seems to me that from a strictly musical standpoint, praise bands tend to do a better job than their small church pianist counterparts. However, that may be due to the fact that music tends to be seen as a much bigger deal in more contemporary churches, and indeed sometimes is the predominant reason that people attend that particular church, whereas in general music is a much smaller matter in the more traditional churches. Just something to think about.

You edited your post, so I deleted mine. Now I am hesitant to post again because I am terrible at “convincing” anyone about anything logically… but I like to help. So I've found any verse that I even thought could apply to your first question and divided them into to categories. You can decide if you think they really apply or not.
Supporting the idea of paid musicians in the church:
Deuteronomy 25:4
Luke 10:7
1 Timothy 5:18 (cross references are the above verses)
Discouraging idea of paid musicians in the church:
Matthew 21:13
1 Peter 5:2
1 Timothy 6:9-10
2 Corinthians 11:8
^(To be edited if I find more.)^

Sarah, I didn't edit my post because of anything you said - I must have been editing it as you were replying, because I didn't change it after I saw your reply. Sorry about that - if you still have your reply saved somewhere I'd like to read it again. I'm not expecting anyone to necessarily convince me one way or another, I just wanted to know why people think what they do.
Thanks for the scriptures, those are helpful to keep in mind. Let me know if you come across any more.
Hiruko Kagetane
Well…God does tell us to use our gifts (1 Peter 4:10-11), and to use them for His glory. So to me, the better question would be: "How do you feel God is calling you to use the gift He has given you?" If you believe He is calling you to use it to support yourself and/or your family, or simply to serve the church, should be between you and your pastor.
Now, for the second question, as we know that people have different gifts, and that you should use them to bless others (Romans 12:6-8), I don't believe that it is wrong to help those who are in a church outside of our own. And, as long as that person is a Christian, I don't believe that there should be a threat of teaching different doctrine, because that person would be interviewed by the pastor of the church, and would use music approved by the pastor, right? So, I would not say that it would be wrong to hire a Christian to play music in the church.
Seth W.
In reply to your second point, yes, any outside musician would be 'interviewed' to find out their beliefs and make sure they are closely enough aligned with the church's beliefs so as not to be a problem. And yes, often the musician would send the songs he is planning on using to the pastor each week to get them 'approved'.
Sarah B.
I'm sorry, Seth. One thing I'm very bad about is jumping to conclusions very quickly, and getting upset about them. I shouldn't do that. It could have just been my reading it too… I read it one way yesterday, and then when I read it today I got a different idea from it. It's just that beginning part I didn't remember seeing before… I'm sorry.
This is what I had posted before (they're just my thoughts really… so they aren't what you wanted "backed by scripture"):
"My thoughts originally were that musicians should be serving with their gifts. Not paid. If they are called to use their gift as a ministry in the church they should not expect to be paid. I have never been a part of a church that had paid musicians or song leaders, mostly because the churches were not able to afford that, so people from the congregation who were talented volunteered. I still think that is more preferable, keeping money and the love of it out of the church, but I can’t say there is anything wrong with a paid musician either.
“Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.” – 1 Corinthians 14:12
Your second question: I don’t think it sounds like a good idea for a church to hire someone from outside of the church. I think that fellowship, and the harmony of believers, is an important part of church. This is best done when they are all of the same mind as far as doctrine goes (Philippians 2:2). And someone come from the outside to lead can lead to problems because, like you said, they could have other doctrine. However, I have known this to work in a situation where the pastor knew the song leader well, and so although he was not in the church the song leader soon joined the church and became "the song leader."
^I don’t know that I like the idea of “joining a church” either… but that’s a different topic.^"
Seth W.
Thanks. :)

Danny Boy
O Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
from glen to glen, and down the mountain side;
the summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying
'tis you, 'tis you must go, and I must bide
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow;
or when the valley's hushed and white with snow:
'tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
O Danny boy, O Danny boy, I love you so.
And if you come, and all the flowers are dying
and I am dead, as dead I well may be
I pray you'll find the place where I am lying
and kneel and pray and ave there for me
Then I shall hear, though soft you tread above me
and all my grave will warm and sweeter be
and then you'll kneel, and whisper that you love me
and I shall sleep in peace until you come to me
Who else sings that song??
