I'm at step 20 now and totally lost. I don't think it looks quite right, but can't figure out what's missing.

it looks like you are on step 18. the rest of it is just forming the body. You can always start over :D now that you have done it once, it should be much easier. You already have a pretty nice butterfly. If you do decide to start over, just finish it somehow. it doesn't have to look just like the diagrams. You can just finish it however you want

any of you who happen to be really mathematically inclined here is a link to an article about some of the amazing math of origami http://langorigami.com/science/math/hja/hja.php also an interesting fact. With any flat folded peice of paper, (that means if it is folded flat) any of the intersections, the difference of the sum of all the mountain folds and the sum of all the valley folds will be 2. that means, if you take anything folded out of paper, squash it down flat, and look at one place where multiple creases come together. then count the mountain and valley creases that come together there, there will be either two more valley folds then mountain folds, or two more mountain than valley folds. One more thing. Origami USA annually hosts an Origami By Children competition. Anyone younger than 18 is invited to send in one or two models. then they will pick the best, and those models will be displayed at different places. see here for more info https://origamiusa.org/obc I did it last year, and you can see mine here https://origamiusa.org/gallery/origami_by_children/2014/mary_gordon?page=2
just so you know. about half of the entries get chosen, and it is best to do it out of some color paper other than white.
Shaggydog (Bloodhound)
uh…do U know how to make a guinea pig? THat would be sooo cool!
Sarah B.
When I was little I made a napkin rabbit… but I've forgotten how.
water-walker
I can't say I do. that wold be hard because they have so few defining caracheteristics they just look like a ball with a couple of legs sticking out…. kind of
Shaggydog (Bloodhound)
hahaha X) that was funny…..
@ Sister sarah: I used to make napkin roses like this one:

oh those. yeah those are pretty cool roses.
Shaggydog (Bloodhound)
:) most of my origami (id that even counts!) are just pieces of rumpled paper…yeah……..I am a shame to folding paper!
Shaggydog (Bloodhound)

8 Pointed Ninja Star Instructions
-
Start with a square piece of paper. Fold it in half to make a triangle and then unfold it and refold it the other way to make another triangle. Then unfold it. You should have two diagonal folds.
-
Fold it in half backwards. So instead of having a fold that dips in like the triangle folds you have a "mountain" fold.
-
Fold it so it looks like this:
- Then fold the other corner the same way so it looks like this:
- Now fold it in half while pushing in the bottom half so that it looks like this:
Make a total of 8. Then to join them follow these instructions:
- Put one blade between the double flaps of another one. Like this:
- Then fold the double flaps down into the other one to lock it in place. Like this:
- Once that is completed pull the right one down all the way. Do this to all the blades. And ta-da! You have an 8 pointed ninja transforming star! :D
EDIT: Make sure when joining together though that at the end they all fit nicely…so if need be when folding down the little flaps start with the right one all the way joined to the other and not out as the picture shows…

I realized that I haven't put another tutorial up in a few days…so here goes. :) Before I showed how to do the 8 pointed ninja star. Well, here's the four pointed ninja star. :) After this one I have a few other instructions to put…we'll see when I get around to putting them up. :P
This time…instead of a square piece you're going to use a rectangular piece. The easiest way to do it is to take a 8/11 1/2 piece of paper and fold it in half and then cut it apart. Then take each half and fold them both in half and cut those apart. Make sure to have the paper so that the long side is vertical of you and the 8 inch sides are horizontal of you. (if that makes sense… :P) Now you have four slips of paper…which can make two different stars. Fold each of the four slips the same way as instructed below.
- Fold the slip in half and keep it folded (the same way in half as above). Then fold it in half the other way (with the long side horizontal and the short ones vertical). Unfold the fold that you just did. It should look like this:
- Fold the top half down as shown in the picture. Then fold the other side so the end is pointing the opposite way.
- Flip the paper over. Then fold each end into a triangle as shown below:
- Place the left sheet on top of the right sheet. Like this:
- Tuck the right side under the left like this:
- Do the same with the other flap…
!http://cdn.instructables.com/FJT/0I34/H6735M0W/FJT0I34H6735M0W.MEDIUM.jpg!
- Flip it over and do the same thing with the other two flaps. And the end product!

I'll probably be able to figure it out eventually, but I just thought I'd let you know that this paragraph is rather confusing to me. Perhaps you could clarify a couple of things–like which way you're supposed to fold it in half at the beginning, and what an "8/11 1/2" piece of paper exactly is? ;)

It sounds like she means an 8" by 11 and 1/2 " (in other words, a regular sheet of paper.) :)

Oooooh. I thought the 1/2 meant something else; I forgot a sheet of paper isn't just plain 8" x 11". :P
biblebee
Sorryyyyy!!! It's a regular sheet of paper. I don't know how to explain it though… Have the short sides on the topband bottom. Fold it so that the 8 inch sides meet each other. If that makes any sense…

Who shouldn't be apologizing? :P Okay, thanks; I'll try again. :D

Okay… um… yeah. I'm sorry if I'm just missing something obvious (as I probably am :P), but I still can't figure it out. :P As you offered to do so… um, I would in fact appreciate other pictures, if you think that they would make things more clear. :}
Hiruko Kagetane
Shuriken woman! Not "ninja star"! Good gosh!
biblebee
Yes, I know that's the real name…generally they're still just called ninja stars in origami…a 4 pointed ninja star, a six pointed ninja star, an eight pointed ninja star, a sixteen pointed ninja star, etc… :P
biblebee
Here are some pics. Hopefully these help. Sorry…but the bottom one is sideways.
SavedByGrace
Augh… so very sorry, but… I still can't figure it out. facedesk I'm trying so hard to go by the pictures, but it just doesn't look the same no matter what I do!! Are the first pictures made out of pieces of paper the size you said to make? Because when I fold and cut the way you said, my pieces look way different from those! And step 3 is majorly confusing… I just can't figure out what it's telling me to do! It's probably a problem with me, not you, but… I just cannot figure this out. xP
biblebee
No, no! It's my fault! I'll try to work on it tomorrow…and if you still can't get it then I'll just show you in June. ;)

Okay, thanks! Sorry for the trouble… it really is probably my fault. :P I'm sure the instructions make perfect sense to someone who knows what they're doing. :P Yeah… I hope it doesn't take that long for me to figure it out, though… xP
biblebee
No it isn't your fault! It is definitely a harder project than the others. ;)
SavedByGrace
No it isn't your fault! It is definitely a harder project than the others. ;)
But that doesn't negate the fact that it's my fault for not figuring out how to do it regardless. :P
