The one question I would raise... the father never tells the girl? That doesn't seem right, possibly. Depending on how the girl is. If the girl happens to like the guy as well, the guy calls the dad, the dad says no... and the girl is just waiting for the day for when she hears from her dad if the guy has made any effort in saying anything about a possible relationship? But, in the case, if the girl doesn't care or has no desire for the guy, then it doesn't seem like it would matter too much.. Very interesting though, and I had never heard of that before.

In that situation, I would expect that the girl would be open with her father about a guy that she likes, and the dad would explain to the girl why he doesn't think the guy is right for her -- and he could do this without explaining that the guy had approached him and asked about her, and that he had told the guy no.

And the reason behind why you wouldn't tell the girl...? Just curious, that's all.

What's the reason to? That would almost tempt her to go behind her father's back and pursue something with the guy, because she now has the knowledge that he was interested in her. But if she just trusts her father's judgment, then she can open her eyes to other guys that her father approves of, instead of being fixated on this one that he rejected.

Somewhat-serious, yes. I mean, to the extent that the guy and girl get to know each other pretty well. Not just an acquaintance. They hang out a lot with each other's families. So it's sort of like a courtship without the open acknowledgment that either is interested in the other. Then if the guy decides he is interested in the girl, he asks the father; if the father approves, he asks the girl; if she says yes, then they're regarded as engaged and begin planning for marriage. So, yes, it entails much more commitment, which is the only appropriate context in which emotional intimacy should be pursued – which is often the problem with courtship in its common form.
