Yours or mine? ^and don't bother to answer, because I probably won't see it anyway^

Just the way you were raised. No biggie. Just continue to remember that virtually no one else in the world uses the word _being_ that way, so confusion is bound to arise from time to time. xPMany apologies to you and Christian. Though, it makes perfect sense in my mind - perfect sense. It's just the way I think, apparently. =PIt was being just that. Now the brothers want me to play basketball so I leave to do that. :)"Was being." LOL, you guys do use that phrase pretty often. :P
Can you give me a grammatical rule that tells me "was being" can't be used in case like that? =p I only ask because it makes so much sense in my mind, more than just "I grew up with it", that I can't fathom it not being right. =D
Christian Alexander
I cannot. That's part of the problem. It's more of just a "general usage" thing. I could create a rule that would summarize it for you, but I don't know how helpful that would be. Essentially, the problem I see with it is that it combines two "being" verbs under a third-person neuter noun/pronoun. With first- and second-person (and even many third-person) nouns, this isn't a problem (e.g., She is being unreasonable, You are being annoying, etc.).
(For reference, "being" verbs are the following: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been.)
But when you get into inanimate/nebulous third-person concepts like "it" or "this day" or "my life," you get to a point where two being verbs together don't really make sense – and I think it's probably because those inanimate/nebulous objects don't have being. They are not like people, who actually exist, so it's tougher for it to sound correct. So where you would say, "It was being great!" or "My life is being very difficult right now" or "Those days were being annoying," I would say that you need to eliminate that second "being" verb (which, in these cases, ironically, is being). That would result in "It has been great!" and "My life is very difficult right now" and "Those days were annoying."
By the way, do those last three sound natural to you as well? Can you say it both ways, or do you think only the first three sound natural? I ask because I actually don't know. I don't think I've heard you say things in the form of the last three sentences, but I really don't know.
His Servant
I checked a grammar checker thing on on-line (though I have no clue how accurate they are) and it said there was nothing grammatically wrong about it, though it had some other problems, of which I would not be able to explain.
And your explaining makes sense. I can understand that more now. Regarding the three statements… the first doesn't sound natural really, I don't think. The second sounds normal, and the third… I can't quite tell. The first - not at all, since it seems normal to say "It was being great!" XD Obviously, the first three sentences without changing anything sounds the most natural, but that second one with the correction does sound fine too. =)
Christian Alexander
Lol, yeah, don't know if I would trust an online grammar-checker. xD Especially on matters of specific verb tense like this. But that's just me. ;)
Haha, I understand. It just sounds so ridiculously weird to me. XD
Hiruko Kagetane
I'll ask my Advanced Comp teacher about that one next week, Bethany. It looks grammatically fine, but sounds off, for some reason.
Christian Alexander
Thank you! XD I need to hear an authority's opinion on this issue. Because I know it's not right, but I just can't figure out why. =P
Hiruko Kagetane
Same here. It doesn't roll off the tongue, it just kind of falls off and dies. :P
Christian Alexander
Precisely. XD
Christian Alexander
I really, honestly think it has something to do with the fact that inanimate objects and nebulous ideas cannot have being.
Abigail Rose
…
DATS WHAT MAKES YOU BEAUTIFUL!
Hiruko Kagetane
I mean, since being is synonymous with "existing", it's just weird to say "It was existing great!".
Hiruko Kagetane
@Abigalien - Which Direction are you? Up Direction, Down Direction, Left Direction, or Right Direction? Diagonal Direction left, right?
Christian Alexander
I know what I am. Depressed Direction. Because Zayne left.

Abigail Rose

No. No. No. No. Not replying because that's not me. Nope. Not me. Sam didn't say anything to me. Nope. Nope. Nope.
Christian Alexander
Yeah, but then you would have to change, "You are being annoying" to "You are existing annoying," which makes slightly more sense than your example, but still isn't a great way of arguing against Bethany's way of speech. =P
Abigail Rose
I know what I am. Depressed Direction. Because Zayne left. *cries*
XD
His Servant
Yes! Sam! Do that! The opening sentence was "That sounds awesome" and I replied with "It was being just that!"
Lemme know what they say!
His Servant
I'll be happy to know the truth about it all. but I don't know if I'll change my speech, because it's an extremely strong habit. If you haven't noticed. Whereas with the to thing, I realized my problem and I have tried to change it.
Hiruko Kagetane
@Christian - Don't be sad, the Jonas brothers didn't last long either. :)
Hiruko Kagetane
@Christian - But in that context, "being" was synonymous with "acting", i.e "You are acting annoying". In the context of Bethany's phrase, the word "being" could have been dropped altogether without changing the intent of the message. And since clear conversation aims to be clear and concise, I'd say that dropping it would be the better option.
His Servant
I'll get back with you sometime regarding your question to me on the media discussion. :) It was a great question, and makes me realize I need to think more on what I stated. But I don't have my thoughts together enough to do it at this moment.
Christian Alexander
Haha, I know you won't change. ;) And I don't mind.

BUT ZAYNE WAS MY FAVORITE!! HE WAS THE MOST HANDSOME OF THEM ALL!!
^Actually, no. If I had to even care, he was probably my least favorite. He always stuck out like a sore thumb to me. It always looked like he didn't belong – let alone that he didn't usually act like he wanted to be there. So I feel like it was only natural for him to leave. =P^
His Servant
I think we have all agreed that dropping the word "being" could help a lot. In that case, regarding you two, you will know not to ever develop the habit since it leads to unclear and unconcise meanings. Regarding me, since it already is a strong habit, I will try not to do it consciously, but if it happens to come out sometimes, everyone will realize that it was ingrained in my mind for many years. And even Nicolas will remember that. =)
So there. Glad to have gotten that discussion taken care of. XDDD
Christian Alexander
Agreed. ;)

That I am. Though I'm not all that proud of it. =P Honestly, when I heard the news, I was like, "Good riddance!" And then I realized that there are probably going to be millions of teenage girls around the world bawling their eyes out at the news… And then I was sad for the state of our world. =P

Millions of teenage girl's families are bawling their eyes out. The girls committed suicide. ;) :P

Wow. =P I mean, that's probably the case in some instances. Even more reason for me to be sad. =P
His Servant
Hey, Christian, if you haven't already gotten the thing in the mail, it should come today, if Rosie's and I "3 days for mail" works correctly this time. =)
Christian Alexander
Oh, great! I'll be looking out for it, then. :D

@ Bethany: Just got your letter! Going to open it soon! =D

Yay! XD
EDIT - It's to Nicolas and Rosie too, don't forget. ;)

I got to talk to the king of my favorite forums! XD
Christian Alexander
Lol, I actually thought it was for the whole family, and then when I opened it the letter said it was just to us three. xD
But we love them! Thank you so much! I didn't expect it at all, especially the ones you have from my tablet. It's especially awesome to have the picture of you, Carissa, and me on the train in tangible picture form. I can't wait to put it in my room. x)
You're so thoughtful. Thanks again! ^ _ ^

I thought I mentioned that to you when I first told you about it, but whatever. =p And glad you liked them, I hoped you would. And like I said, it wasn't much, but I did tell Rosie I'd send you guys pictures sometimes. ;) And sorry there wasn't any specific one for Nicolas, hopefully he doesn't mind too much…
Haha… you're welcome. =]

You probably did, but it was a while ago, so I don't remember. =P It was a spectacular surprise. ;)
Nicolas didn't mind. =P He doesn't care much for pictures anyway. ;)
