Mhmm. Today. I learned how much I dislike secular music. It's absolutely dreadful!!!!
So, does this mean you and COS can never be?
*Glares* QUIT IT!!!

AHA! So, you want you two to, ahem, "be", and so you're trying to avoid the fact that he does like some secular music (which, you do. Classical music isn't Christian music [I know about Handel's Messiah, that doesn't apply here. :P]) so as not to contradict yourself (which you already are)!

Totally called it.

We were at a 'conservative' church today, and I decided to come down hard on them. OK, I'm kind of kidding there. :) Their service was a 'vibrant' service- a mixture of 'traditional hymns' and 'a few modern Christian songs'. *You probably wouldn't like attending our church...* OK, one, I realized how depressing the 'conservative modern' songs are. They aren't grand like the old hymns, they aren't stimulating like the liberal 'music', they're just _depressing_. *They're depressing to you because you don't like the style. A person will feel happy listening to songs they like; and they will feel depressed listening to a style they don't like. I could have predicted you would have felt that way. This has no bearings whatsoever on the discussion. Oh, BTW, have you ever read Psalm 88? If anything is depressing, that psalm is.* Two, there was absolutely _no_ theological depth. They were just mushy songs, much like a love song a man would sing to his wife. Is that really an appropriate way to express our love of God? *First of all, could you give an example of "no theological depth"?* *If you feel it is inappropriate, I will try to have a Romans 14 attitude; but what really is wrong with expressing love to God in this way? You know, Christ is the church's bridegroom!* And then, they went and put 'O The Deep, Deep Love of Jesus' to the tune of _'Come Thou Fount'_. Seriously? _*Seriously?*_ That does not fit at all!!!! *This is not actually a contemporary practice. You don't like it, but what is sinful about it??* Anyhoo, that's my little speel of frustration on this particular church :)

When the prostitutes from the Temple of Diana were converted and came to the church, was it appropriate for them to bring in some of the practices from that temple into the church?

Even the way they wore their hair was a problem, because it was identified with prostitution, thus 1 Timothy 2:9.

EDIT: The point of that is that there's no problem with the hairstyle itself, but it was used in Satanic worship, and so there was a problem with it.

I don't exactly like it…I don't like how it's sung at all. But it's definitely not near as bad as most secular music…that's for sure! But I should clarify…I don't like most secular music!

Okay, let me think how to define this in the way I mean it :) I don't like the secular music you hear people listening to in their cars…blaring loud…or the ones played in the store, etc…
Sorry.

Then by your definition, movie soundtracks, classical music, etc. are secular.

I think that is a perfectly good definition of secular music. But Carissa isn't saying she dislikes all secular music. ;)

Generalize much? People can blast anything. Seriously. Just say "I don't like most secular music." and leave it at that. Hobby Lobby is a nice craft store, they play Christian music. Kinda ruins your generalization, doesn't it?

As does my dad, but some might not call screamo Christian music, Christian…

Most Christian radio plays the world's music, under the label of 'Christian', with 'good' words. But not all Christian radio. I'm listening to Christian radio right now, and haven't heard a single piece of that kind of 'music' all day, or in all the years that I've been listening to this station.

EDIT: See, there's the exception again!

And what he was saying is that Hobby Lobby plays hymns, and so I said that reason was because they were Christians.

An interesting statistic on Christian radio that I came across a while ago is that Christian radio is made to cater to unbelieving 30-some single soccer moms.

I would be very interested in hearing what all of you think about this piece of music;

A couple things to think about when you listen to it;
-This is an arrangement of a well-known hymn that you will find in many common hymnals.
-This music does incorporate elements that are used in jazz, rock, etc.
-Greg Howlett (the arranger) is a fairly well-known and boldly Christian pianist, who minored in music in college and is an active and respected church musician.

Just so you know, opinions are very much divided over this piece. Some people think it's great, others are convinced it's straight from hell. I don't expect everyone to agree, but I thought that it may be helpful to have some specific examples to look at during this discussion.

Thanks to everyone for keeping this discussion under control and communicating in a spirit of love and desire to learn; I know how easy it is for me to over-react to someone who disagrees with my viewpoint, so thank you for allowing us all to continue this discussion with gentleness and respect toward our fellow brothers and sisters.

I know it has. I've struggled with that very same thing myself many times, which is why I wanted to encourage everyone to make this an Ephesians 4:29 discussion.

So I listened to it…and didn't like it. It was way too jazzy and stuff. I don't think it's "straight from hell" but I definitely don't like it.

He wasn't…and he did agree with our position.

But still. Isn't this pointless? Arguing with Dani isn't going to make her tolerate rock music, nor is she going to convince me to listen only to hymns. If we're trying to "edify" each other, shouldn't we just present our info, and leave it at that?

I know. I'm going to be a hypocrite, and not take my own advice. Conflict is inevitable. But…is it worth it?

Alls I'm asking.
