Music

Unless something is defined in Scripture as "belonging to Satan," I don't think it can be biblically rejected in the worship of God. Obviously, Deuteronomy 12 is a direct commandment of God regarding what His people are to avoid. But God never gives any implication that an arrangement of sounds and musical notes are inherently evil and can never be used in His worship.
Vibrations that hit our ear drums can never be inherently evil. That makes no sense. Their connotations and associations may be evil, but if the thing itself is not defined as evil by God, there is no reason to say that it cannot be used for His glory.

Perhaps I am completely off the subject (I apologies if it is)but for some reason well I was reading this last post I kept thinking of these verses (maybe because I had been memorizing them): “And lest you go among these nations, these who remain among you. You shall not make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause anyone to swear by them; you shall not serve them nor bow down to them, but you shall hold fast to the Lord your God, as you have done to this day.” Joshua 23:3-13 I kept thinking about how imperative it was that the Children of Israel NOT mix with sin in God’s eyes in ANY way! God was not pleased when the priest offered up profane fire in Leviticus 10:1-3.
James 4:17.
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
No, not off the subject at all.
In It Not Of It
have any of you read "strange fire" by bill gothard?
BREAKING NEWS! It's...ah...nobody important. nevermind.
Deadpool likes chimichangas. Your argument is invalid.
Sarah B.
Love Bill Goatherd's stuff! But no I have not read that book. I think I probably got the idea of strange fire applying to music from his seminars. :)
Dani(elle)
So……. your basically saying if I hit a drum I'm sinning?
Dani(elle)
Satan owns his worship. It cannot be used to worship God. @Danielle- It is what the witch doctors used in their ceremonies, and it cannot be said that they were worshiping God.
Yeah they might have used them that doesn't mean they where created for that purpose.
In It Not Of It
….oh i love chimichangas….
I used to have all the technical stuff memorized too, but none of that matters when you are debating the topic of music. The technical stuff is all personal conviction. Theres no proof that the rock beat is bad.
"There is no 11th commandment that says thou shalt not listen to rock music"
thats true. and it is not something to divide over.especially when there are bigger fish to fry in the church so to speak. But you can deny that a lot of CCM artists are just using Gods name for their own glory-taking his name in vain. and that IS breaking one of the ten commandments.
Matthew Minica
Yes (e.g. for washing poor people's old beat up cars, or as scraps for quilts to keep the eskimos warm).
Exactly. Good point, Margaret.
Matthew Minica
"Some rap may cause a man to understand the Gospel, and show him in the way to the cross."
Just wanted to bring up a point real quick… Music is not a good means of spreading the gospel. Its intent in the Christian world is to edify believers, not bring unbelievers to Christ.

Your points are irrelevant. Deadpool likes chimichangas. Therefore, rock music is good. And investing in carpets is a excellent idea.
In It Not Of It
oh ok..i see….we are investing in a carpet any day now!

echoing Carissa, please do not be ridiculous and silly on the Theology forums.

No, I'm saying that if you hit a drum in a way that is used to worship Satan, you are sinning.

Scraps for quilts to keep the Eskimos warm??? XDXDXD
So if you sold your brother to provide nursing home care for your grandma, that would justify it?
In It Not Of It
Wait….I don't listen to rock music, but it is NOT a sin …and beating a drum in CCM is not worshipping Satan…
Matthew Minica
First of all, that would be illegal; secondly, that is an act rather than an object (such as music or clothing).
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
Music is an act.
Andrew
Lol. Music is an object, as long as it is not listened to or performed or read…

Honestly, I think this discussion has become redundant. All we're doing right now is saying what we've said before. Both sides see the other side's argument as irrational, and I haven't seen much Scripture quoted by anyone. A bit, but not enough to support the majority of arguments spouted by either side. We are told to "abstain from every appearance of evil", but also that "all things are lawful". I think we understand each other enough to agree to disagree, don't you?
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
Well, the music is causing brethren to stumble, and deceiving others, so we ought not to even listen to it, but never, ever, ever use it in church.
BREAKING NEWS! It's...ah...nobody important. nevermind.
we is brethren? I degree with SamuEl. ye hast waxed unhelpful for the argument on both sides.
In It Not Of It
I A-gree with Samuel. We are really just getting nowhere
Sarah B.
Maybe you could all divide your attention to other topics as well. (hint, hint) :)

Well, the music is causing brethren to stumble, and deceiving others, so we ought not to even listen to it, but never, ever, ever use it in church.
Well…. we used it in church this morning. And I know that I was very uplifted by what we sang (a modern arrangement of "How Firm a Foundation," for example). To my knowledge, it caused no one in the room to stumble, but rather to proclaim praises to God.
Sarah B.
Dose it ever bother you when a really secular music singer sings a christen song? just wondering…
Christian Alexander
Yes, completely. Especially around Christmas time. >_>
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)

So did we, unfortunately. And I sure wasn't uplifted.
Rock music causes anger, malice, hate, strife, fornication, uncleanness, covetousness, blasphemy, and filthy language, and yet CCM imitates sin under the label of 'praise', and 'worshiping God'. (Eph. 4:31, 5:3-4, Col. 3:8)

Did you not see what I wrote? Can we just drop this? No one is benefiting from any of this! We've said all we can, and there's no new info being presented! Neither side is going to compromise their beliefs, so let's just agree to disagree.
biblebee
YES!!!!!!
SavedByGrace
@Sam–I'll agree to disagree in just a moment. :P
ANY style of music can inspire those feelings in a person, if he wants it to! Rock music does not cause such feelings in everyone; saying that it does is certainly an over-generalization! Mere sound waves cannot be sinful, only the things with which the sound waves are associated. Rock music is not always associated with evil things, and it doesn't have to be. Anything, if used correctly, can be used to honor God.
To obey Sam's wishes, this will be my last comment on the topic… for now. ;)
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
This is weird, but I heard this as I read your comment.
Certain forms of music cannot be separated from their culture.
In It Not Of It
Music makes you feel how you felt when you first the song
this song reminds me of my little brother having his open heart surgeries and nearly dying

huh??
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
We were at a 'conservative' church today, and I decided to come down hard on them. OK, I'm kind of kidding there. :)
Their service was a 'vibrant' service- a mixture of 'traditional hymns' and 'a few modern Christian songs'.
OK, one, I realized how depressing the 'conservative modern' songs are. They aren't grand like the old hymns, they aren't stimulating like the liberal 'music', they're just depressing.
Two, there was absolutely no theological depth. They were just mushy songs, much like a love song a man would sing to his wife. Is that really an appropriate way to express our love of God?
And then, they went and put 'O The Deep, Deep Love of Jesus' to the tune of 'Come Thou Fount'. Seriously? *Seriously?* That does not fit at all!!!!
Anyhoo, that's my little speel of frustration on this particular church :)

Thank you for this juicy piece of gossip. I shall proceed to back-bite to other people about the lukewarmity of this church, and rather than waste my time of video games, I'm gonna endlessly argue against this music mash-up.
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
Thank you for your opinion. Noted -and appreciated- :P

Also, thank you for assuming that we cared. I mean, it's not like we _already_ had someone whine about church's music and had a HUGE unnecessary debate about it, right?

Especially as she IS the one who brought up the whining about the last church.
