Memorize 1 Verse from N.T. chapters
A few years back I picked out a key verse to memorize from every chapter of the New Testament. I want to share the list with the Memverse family. On January 1st, 2012, we will start a, Lord willing, active support group of people who want to memorize these 260 exciting verses in one year. Bible Bee participants may want to finish all 260 before the start of this year's Bee. Others may want to go at a slower pace than 260 verses in a year. You may start late and/or go at whatever pace you want and still participate in the group.
The official pace is: Jan = MATTHEW 1-28; Feb = MARK 1-16; Mar = LUKE 1-24; Apr = JOHN 1-21;
May = ACTS 1-28; June = ROMANS 1-16; July = 1 and 2 CORINTHIANS (29); Aug = GAL - COL (20);
Sept = 1 THESS - PHILEMON (22); Oct = HEBREWS & JAMES (18); Nov = 1 PETER - JUDE (16); Dec = REVELATION 1-22
We would love to list all participants as an encouragement and inspiration to others. We would also love to list all groups memorizing together.
2012 NTOYC participants: Angela; Angelyn Metran; AstroLeah; Bethany Pentimone; ChosenByHim; Darcy Joy; Dhestielyn Metran; Grace Mieczkowski; Hannah Jane; InSoloChristo; Jacky Walker; Katrina; Kayode Olaniyi; Leah; Luxon Mavindidze; Margaret Eddy; Marlene Metran; Martha Wright; Mommy's Helper; Monica Duitsman; Nina; Phil Walker; Rachel; Redeemed By God; Rhea Metran; Roger Dalton; Sarah; Sarah Eddy; Solo Scriptura (Peter); Stephanie Hills; Thomas Youngman; Walker Junior (we trust); Zach Justice; Isaac Hannah; Soul Winner = 35 people
Groups memorizing together: Roger Dalton and Zach Justice quoting on Sundays in the 1984 NIV in Clinton Corners, NY
Solo Scriptura (Peter) and Katrina memorizing in the KJV in Michigan
Walkers (Phil, Jacky, Junior) memorizing in the 1984 NIV in the Philippines and Indonesia
Accountability Chart:
Those who wish can join our chart where we will list the first name, first initial of the last name, state (or country), and progress. The 260 verses convenently breaks down into 26 groups of 10 verses each to be declared. Verses don't have to declared in order. A sample declaration would be Zach J NY MATT 1:21; 2:11; 3:8; 4:19; 5:16; 6:24; 7:21; 8:3; 9:36; 10:28;

I recommend memorizing this list of verses for Bible Bee enthusiasts, SavedbyGrace's "entire Bible" group, and any others who want a good overall grasp of the New Testament. Others may simply want a collection of 260 powerful treasures. Please let us know if you are joining, if you have family or friends memorizing with you, and if you have any tips or ideas to encourage or support others in the group. I will be posting my daily email devotionals I send out based on these verses. I look forward to any feedback, insights, or thoughts you have as we interact with the daily Scripture and each other’s thoughts.
This is my last of 5 years I will be emailing these devotionals. In 2013 I will send out devotionals based on Old Testament chapters and will be making a new list of key NT verses to write devotionals for in future years.. If you want to receive these 2012 daily devotionals in your email inbox, or if you want to send private feedback, you can email me at philjohn1558@yahoo.com.

I feel bad that I can't join you in either this or the Elijah Project--I dumped way too much on myself after the National Bible Bee and I'm getting lazy with memorizing each day. As I say a little too often, I would join you if I could. I think this would be about seventh on my memorizing projects, so I probably won't be catching up with you. But may God bless all of you in your memorization projects! :)
I am joining! I was pondering something like this the other day, and with the NTOYC project, the work of selecting key verses is already done for me :)
Phil this sounds great! I have Bible quizzing right now, but I'd like to join anyway. I don't know how much I will be able to memorize, but with the Lord's help I will do it.
I'm up for it!! Let's do this thing!
Whew! This is my 3rd project! I'm also memorizing Romans and "Elijah". This is going to be challenging! I'll have to stay focused...
Christian, never tremble!
Never be downcast!
Gird thee for the battle;
Watch and pray and fast.
~John M. Neale, 1862
(Although I don't find Scripture memory quite that intimidating!
Count me in! For the past week I had been considering what sort of not-too-strenuous memorization plan I wanted to follow now that the Bible Bee and Christmas are behind me. This is absolutely perfect! Thank you, Mr. Walker :)
Wow, Phil - you put a lot of time into this - thank you for sharing. I have been attempting a similar project; but have been trying to pick a key verse or theme verse from each book of the Bible... I've discovered it's difficult to narrow it down to one verse.
Just curious, Phil, if you have one from each book that you think would be the key verse for the book?
Also, if anyone else has done a study of any book of the Bible and has a suggestion which verse you think is the key for that book... I would love to hear from you!
@Darcy Joy,
I'm not sure how we overlooked getting your contact info at Nationals...... we would like to send you our family newsletter, and realized we don't have your address! Could you shoot me an email? (Just click on my name above this comment, and you'll see my email on my profile).
Thanks!
I will join this project! I would love to join every project on Memverse, but homeschooling is keeping me VERY busy now. :) This is a wonderful way to get an overview of the New Testament. Should we declare all of the verses from the list that we already have memorized, even the ones that are not from Matthew?
Count me in! Just added all of January's verses into my account. Hopefully I'll be able to finish this and 1 Peter before Bible Bee starts again. ;)
My sister (Katrina) and I would like to join the NTOYC. We will be reciting together in the KJV, in Michigan. Lord willing, I would like to finish before the Bible Bee in June. If anyone is interested, I started a "New Testament One Year Challenge" group.
Thank you, Mr. Walker, for sharing your list and starting this project!
I would really like to join too, but I'm kind of tied up at the moment with Romans and Elijah. I might join later on.
(I just memorized my 238th verse today!!!! Yea!!! )
Great to see many joining us. I pray these verses will be powerful in our lives (and good Bible Bee prep for those in the Bee). I can't wait to get started.
Solo Scriptura, the verses are typed out in the KJV at www.scripture-memory-support.org/ntoyckjv.html
They are available in the 1984 NIV, NKJ, NASB, and ESV at www.scripture-memory-support.org/newtestament.html
Please let me know if anyone wants them typed out in another translation or language.
I would love to join you in this.....but I feel the same way Nicolas does about this. I have dumped too much into my lap at once. God bless you all !
@Rachel- Are you memorizing both Romans and Elijah? I am, and that is why I can't really join right now.
How many siblings do you have? How many brothers and sisters? I have six siblings, and they are all boys.
If anyone needs help memorizing Matthew in the NIV 1984, check out "Matthew". (The movie) It's a word-for-word dramatization of the Gospel of Matthew. When I was younger, I had the entire gospel memorized just from watching those videos. It is 4-hours long, but if you have extra down time, it's a great memory tool!
I would like to do this! I can't wait till tomorrow! I might not go at the pace everyone else is, though.
Happy New Year!
Can we do declarations now? If so, here goes: Thomas Y NY Matt 1:21, 2:11, 3:8, 4:19, 5:16, 6:24; 7:21; 8:3; 9:36; 10:28, 11:28.
BTW This is a great motivator between the Bible Bee. Thanks Phil!
Rosie - I am memorizing 1 Peter, Elijah, and want to do Romans soon. :)
And for siblings, I have 4 brothers (11, 8, 6, 4 months) and a sister (4 years) I hope that sometime you get a sister! :) I didn't have a sister for 10 years....so I know how you feel :)
Phil Walker- should verses be declared consectutively (Matt. 1:12, 2:34, 3:7,), or does the order not matter?
I hope this goes well for you all! This is wonderful that you all are doing so much memory work! Like Nicolas and Rachel said, I don't think I'll be joining...even though it's a great thing to do! Right now, I have some of my own memorization plans -- I'm working on 1 Thessalonians. I have quite a few other books after 1 Thess. that I would like to memorize once that one is done.
Can we choose our own verses from each chapter (for example, Mark 13:31 instead of Mark 13:11)? I certainly wouldn't mind at all to go by the list, though. Thank you, Mr. Walker, for starting this project!
Great to see so much enthusiasm as we kick this off. May God bless you as you memorize and meditate on MATTHEW 1:21
@Thomas, thanks for kicking off our declaration board. Did you already know some of these or just get really motivated to memorize 10 verses?
@Redeemed by God, you don't have to declare in order. As AstroLeah mentioned, people are welcome to declare any verses from any book on the list that you have already memorized.
@AstroLeah, you are welcome to declare your own verses MARK 13:31 is a fantastic choice that probably does a better job of summing up the end time theme of MARK 13. OCTSRIS also mentioned MATTHEW 1:23 which is as good a choice as the 1:21 I picked. However, for the many Memverse quizzes we are planning and any other helps I or the group organizes will use the official list. Maybe you can memorize 2 verses where you really love an alternative and keep sharp on the list for the quizzes.
@Jael, I absolutely love the MATTHEW movie from the Visual Bible. Their ACTS is also word for word from the 1984 NIV and good for memorizing, although I thought they could have made ACTS a lot more exciting and their casting for Peter is as opposite as possible from what I imagine Peter to have been like. They also did a fantastic job on Gospel of John which is about 95% word for word from another translation, taking out the "he saids" and a few other things to help it flow better.
@ My All for Him - I'll work on getting a complete list to you. A few that stand out to me would be MARK 10:45; LUKE 19:10; JOHN 20:31 (which sums up the book without being the one I picked to highlight the chapter); ACTS 1:8; ROMANS 5:8; 6:23; or 12:1 all could work; GALATIANS 5:13; PHILIPPIANS 1:21; COLOSSIANS 1:15; JAMES 2:17; 1 JOHN 5:13 (not the popular out of context abuse of the verse that everyone who has been told to use the Jesus Christ password is to be 100% positive they are going to heaven which contradicts the rest of the book); REVELATION 17:14
Happy New Year everyone!!!!! I've missed y'all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have decided to memorize 1 book of the Bible a month. :) Ruth is for January and so on. How many verses will Juniors have to memorize this year/
MATTHEW 1:21 "She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
God humbling Himself to become a human baby will always be a mind boggling miracle. (Read PHILIPPIANS 2:5-11) May we never forget that the One who made us and who we will ultimately answer to with eternity on the line came down to be one of us, as He bore the Name meaning "God saves!"
Declaration - Leah W MO Matthew 1:21, 2:11, 3:8, 4:19, 5:16, 6:24, 7: 21
I started working on these Dec. 30 and have them memorized. I hope to keep up with memorizing 1 a day. This is exciting!
Here is my first declaration: Leah B OH Set A: Matthew 5:16, Mark 13:31, John 15:7, 10:10, Romans 1:16, 5:8, 6:23, 8:28, 10:9, 12:2; Set B: Philippians 4:19, 1 Thessalonians 5:18, 2 Timothy 3:16, Titus 2:14, Hebrews 4:12, 11:6, 13:8, 1 Peter 3:15, 1 John 4:19, Revelation 4:11.
@OCTSRIS - Are smilies safe? I think I heard somewhere that they can cause viruses, but I'm not sure if that's true or not.
@Rachel--Wow! Ten years. If we have a girl, then I will be nearly twelve years older.
The ages of my brothers are 15, 13, 9, 7, 5 and 2. I am the third oldest.
I would love everyone's insights and thoughts on these verses we are memorizing. Here are my thoughts on MATTHEW 2:11 and 3:8
MATTHEW 2:11 "On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh."
I'm often struck by the faith and devotion of the magi. They gave so much of their time and resources to worship a little baby born in a stable to poor parents; then went home empty-handed, and apparently satisfied their trip had been worthwhile. (They didn't stop by the palace to impress and likely receive a reward from King Herod)
They also didn't just "give their best" to Jesus. Their gifts were the right gifts!! Gold, incense, and myrrh signifying Jesus' role as King, Priest, and Sacrifice for our sins. God isn't as interested in our ability or effort as in our availability. Will we wake up each morning, saying, "I'm yours. What do you want me to do today to bring you glory? I want to be sensitive to your leading. I'm ready to go where you send me (even half way around the world) and to give whatever time and/or resources you prompt me to as I trust you to always do best in my life.
MATTHEW 3:8 "Produce fruit in keeping with repentance."
At first glance, this may seem like a command. "You say you are sorry. OK. Then prove it. Do some good works and we will believe you are sorry." This goes against the heart of Scripture that teaches good works are an outflowing of God and His truth working in us, not something for us to ever do in our own strength (see ISAIAH 64:6).
The call here is to have an authentic repentant heart, the "Godly sorrow" of 2 CORINTHIANS 7:10 that acknowledges our sinfulness and cries out for God, the only Good One ( see MARK 10:18) to change us and produce His fruit, the fruit of the Spirit of GALATIANS 5:22-23 in and through us (see JOHN 15:5).
The opposite of this was the Pharisees John the Baptist spoke these words to. They used God's Word to make them proud (see ROMANS 2:17-24) so they became too hard to repent, instead of letting it be the double-edged sword of HEBREWS 4:12 - 13 which exposes our sin before a holy God and calls us to true repentance opening the door once again for the overflowing of His fruit in our lives.
How is everyone enjoying the verses so far? Here are my thoughts on 4:19 and 5:16. Any feedback?
MATTHEW 4:19 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."
Here we see two essentials in the Christian faith that sometimes get left out of today's trivial gospel. First, to be a Christian is to follow Jesus, the Christ. Our joy and privilege is to find out what He wants and where He is leading us, and simply obey. This is seen clearly in JOHN 10:27 "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me."
Secondly, the Christian faith involves a real, living, and powerful God stepping into our lives, changing us and giving us a life calling and purpose. It doesn't say, "Now that you are a Christian, you should try to go witness a little." Jesus says "I will make you fishers of men." See also ACTS 1:8 "...you will be my witnesses" and JOHN 15:5 "...you will bear much fruit."
Lastly, I love the response. "Immediately, they left their nets and followed Him." I often find it hard to leave the comfortable and familiar to seek and follow Christ in full abandonment. The call here was for the disciples to leave their hometown, their profession of expertise and follow. They answered the call, and were richly blessed beyond their wildest dreams. May we also be prepared no matter what the living Christ calls us to.
MATTHEW 5:16 "In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven."
Our light? That's right, right before this verse, Jesus declares, "You are the light of the world." But before we get too puffed up, we need to know the Bible is clear that in ourselves, we are not the light of the world. In JOHN 1:8 we are told that even the greatest man (besides Christ) who ever lived (John the Baptist -see MATTHEW 11:11) was not the light of the world. Only the life of God in Jesus is the true light of the world. (See JOHN 1:4, JOHN 8:12 & 1 JOHN 1:5)
Our job is to obey GALATIANS 2:20 and die to ourselves that the life of Jesus in us (our hope of glory in COLOSSIANS 1:27) can shine through us and touch the world around us. Wouldn't it be wonderful if today when people see us, they praise God that they see the light of God shining through.
Mr. Walker: Should we declare verses that we have memorized without MemVerse, (including ones we already know, but might be classified as "Learning" on MemVerse) or should we only declare "memverserized" verses? Thanks!!
OOOOPS!!! Sorry; I just now discovered that I'm not supposed to declare verses until I have 10 memorized!
I'll go thru and delete all my previous declarations.
Do we continue to leave declarations here, or is there somewhere else to declare the next set? And could you please explain again why we are doing ten at a time? I've been trying to do 7 a week and that's working pretty well for me.
Leah: I think there are sets of ten so that we can declare each set with a letter. (EXAMPLE: Set "A": Matthew 1:21; 2:11; 3:8; 4:19; 5:16; 6:24; 7:21; 8:3; 9:36; 10:28) As far as I know, you can memorize the verses at any pace you want, but you declare them in sets of ten. I hope that helps!
SoloScriptura, Thanks! I get it now! So I guess I need to make a "re"declaration
Leah W MO Matthew 1:21, 2:11, 3:8, 4:19, 5:16, 6:24, 7:21, 8:3, 9:36, 10:28
Sola Scriptura, you can declare any verses you have memorized, including ones you knew before we started, and not just those you have "memverserized" - good word. (If it makes Webster some day, I would say Memverse has "arrived").
Everyone may declare as you wish. The verses will be added to the chart in groups of 10 as 26 groups of 10 = the 260 verses in the list and corresponds to the 26 letters of the alphabet.
Welcome to Angela, Angelyn, Kayode, and Dhestielyn (who joined as soon as she heard her penpal from the USA was memorizing these verses)

Yeah! First declaration!
@OCTSRIS: We, (God's Maiden of Virtue, Octavius, CheifOfSinners and I), already told you this on the one post, but now I'll tell you again, because it doesn't matter what post you do it on: We are sick of the many huge smileys! One small one is, well, sort of fine, but you go way over the top!
Laura, welcome to the group. Are you also new to Memverse?
InSoloChristo, congratulations on completing the first 10.
Here are my thoughts on 6:24. As always I would love everyone else's feedback or original insights. I would especially love anybody's thoughts on the skit I wrote. Which would you pick if you were a contestant on "What's your treasure?"
MATTHEW 6:24 "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."
Is money evil? Many are quick to point out that the Bible does not say "Money is evil", it ONLY says "the love of money is the root of all evil." (1 Timothy 6:10) However, that means money is at best dangerous, since it is so lovable.
In today's verse, we take money being dangerous to an even higher level. Not only is it lovable, but it is God-like. Think of two basic claims of God: 1) I will satisfy you and bring you happiness 2) I will be your security. If you have me, you have nothing to fear. Does not money make the same two claims? Who do we believe more?
I am convinced there are millions of people who have picked Christianity as their religion of choice, but are trusting money as their GOD! There are an additional millions who can honestly say, "Jesus is my God. He is where my deepest trust is firmly planted." and yet believe enough of the deceitfulness of money to be in bondage financially (see Mark 4:19), rather than free to use money to honor their God. The saddest truth is that both of these dreadful and eternally damaging conditions are actually encouraged in many, if not almost all, of our Christian circles today.
2 questions: 1) Would you enjoy life more and feel more secure with millions of dollars and a little of God, or with a vibrant relationship with the living God with minimal income and no savings? 2) Would your children be better off if you left them millions of dollars and a little of God, or no money, but an authentic faith in the living God who they have come to know for themselves? If you can wholeheartedly and honestly choose God in these extreme hypothetical questions, then you are free to have, use, and glorify God with as much of the dangerous green stuff as God chooses to entrust to you. (The answer, "I would rather pick money, but I know, as a Christian, I should or I have to pick God", is not a freeing answer.)
I will close with my favorite reality check on the subject. What if you spent 24 hours in heaven and then came back to earth? Would you be really excited for a week or two, telling everyone about the streets of gold, the incredible mansion, and best of all, how seeing God with no sin in our lives is more amazing than anything on earth? But then, as the initial thrill fades, would you gradually get back to the "more important?" things of this world? Or would your life and perspective about money and the temporal riches of this world be radically changed for the rest of your days?
Will we shock our culture, and maybe even our church culture, by living each day banking on the reality of a heaven we can't see, and trusting in a literal all-powerful, all-loving, all-wealthy God?

Welcome to the group, Luxon Mavindidze!
Great to see OCTSRIS and Darcy join us on the accountability chart.
Here are my thoughts on MATTHEW 7:21 and 8:3. Would love your feedback.
MATTHEW 7:21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven."
What does it mean to call Jesus, "Lord". We see here and in LUKE 6:46 that Jesus being our Lord has to involve an obedient heart on our part. Going down two more verses, we see that knowing Jesus in an intimate authentic relationship far outweighs being involved in "Christian" activity. I pray that each of us will obey LUKE 13:24 and Philippians 2:12. In this age and culture where the gospel can seem so trivial and fake, I trust each one of us will diligently pursue life transforming mercy and faith in Christ, so that we will not one day be shocked by the words, "Away from me. I never knew you." (MATTHEW 7:23)
MATTHEW 8:3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" Immediately he was cured of his leprosy.
What do you do if you've been a leper all your life? If you've been a social outcast with no hope? Then you hear of Jesus' power! They say He heals the sick and even casts out demons. "Well, what about me? Would He heal me? No one else has done anything for me. What right do I have to think this popular, holy man would heal me? I have heard He is kind, but how kind? Surely He draws the line when it comes to social outcasts with leprosy." With nothing to lose, this man fell on his knees and cried out, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean."
I love Jesus' response. Looking at the verse above what do we see? The first thing Jesus did, even before healing him, was to touch him. Touch a leper?? Unheard of. I don't know about you? If I had two activities on my agenda: 1)Heal a leper and 2) touch a leper; I think I would make sure I healed him first. Not Jesus. He let the man know: "I love you and am not afraid to show it by touching you. I can also heal you." With leprosy often a picture of our sin, what a great picture this is of Jesus reaching down to us with salvation.
May we in turn reach out unafraid to touch people in their sin, bringing them the love of Jesus and the hope of forgiveness and restoration only found in Christ.
Welcome to the group, Monica. You are #28 that I am aware of. All are welcome. Anybody else inviting friends while we are still early in the year?
Okay, I think I'm going to join. :) One question though - do we have to learn the verses in order, and then declare in order, or not? Thanks.
@Bethany
You can declare memorized verses in any order that you want to. The only requirement is that you declare your verses in groups of 10.
Congratulations to Darcy Joy for memorizing her 1,000th verse ! Awesome Job ! Keep up the good work !
Welcome to the group, Bethany. You are #29. Anyone know of someone to recruit for 30 known memorizers of these verses. How is everyone doing? I would love to see feedback and insights. Here are my thoughts on MATTHEW 9:36 and 10:28
MATTHEW 9:36 "When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were haressed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd."
Jesus, give us your eyes that we may see people as you see them, and give us your heart of compassion that we may reach out to those we see in need. Give us your perspective that we may see the fields "white for harvest" and give us a divine purpose that we will always be on call ready to be your harvesters. (See MATTHEW 9:37-38)
I've spent quite a bit of time sharing with Jehovah Witnesses. They have built a religious empire based on the assumption that people are spiritually hungry. They knock on doors, knowing that for every nine doors that get slammed in their face, there will be a tenth one opened, and ready to sign up for whatever religious answers they provide.
Their boldness judges me. My doctrine says, "Everyone has a spiritual vacuum that can only be filled with Christ." On top of that, I claim to know Christ personally, in fact, to have Him live inside of me through the Holy Spirit. Yet I rarely act on those two doctrinal truths, and rather than bring the Bread of Life and Living Water to the spiritually hungry and thirsty, I just leave them to be fair game for those I consider cults and other spiritual counterfeits. O Jesus, give me your eyes, and your courage to act on what I see.
MATTHEW 10:28 "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell."
Starting with Stephen and the 12 apostles, and continuing today in various areas of the world, throughout the ages, there have always been Christians standing strong in the face of suffering and persecution. Often, history recorded Christian martyrs as having an absence of fear even in the midst of dying for their faith. May we live up to this God given mandate to "fear no man" regardless of the threat or difficult circumstance. (For more encouragement see Psalm 23 & 91; 1 Peter 2:20-25; 4:12-19; 5:6-11)
At the same time, we are told to literally have a healthy fear of Almighty God! The fear of God is desperately lacking in many Christian circles today. Has God lost His power? Is He less holy? Do we really think He doesn't care how we live? The powerful demons tremble before GOD (see James 2:19). May we know our place. "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge... (Proverbs 1:7)

When you declare verses, do you have to have them memorized on Memverse?
(Just curious. I'm not joining - yet, anyway. ;D)
Bethany M:
No, the verses do not have to be memorized on MemVerse. You could include verses you already know, and you can declare verses you memorize without MemVerse. MemVerse really helps, though, even if you are also memorizing traditionally.
Good to see the declarations. As we have said, you may declare the verses in any order. However, we encourage you to have a good system of keeping your personal records so that you know which verses you have declared and don't declare the same verses twice.
Bethany P, we are thrilled you are joining us. Hopefully knowing these key verses will be an encouragement when you take on memorizing the books those verses are in. I will only post 2 of your declarations today, but will post the 3rd later. As with other charts, I will normally only post 1 letter for anyone near the leaders.
Bethany M, we always have room for another Bethany if you decide to join us.
@SoloScriptura (Peter)-- Oh good. Because I haven't memorized any of my Elijah verses on MemVerse yet.
Here are my thoughts on MATTHEW 11:28 and 12:12. As always, we would love your feedback and insights:
MATTHEW 11:28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
What an invitation! "Come to me." No strings attached. Open access to all. Our part is simply to acknowledge our need (as the weary and burdened) of Him (the rest provider) The heart of Christianity is not doctrine, or church. The heart is Christ Himself, the only one who can give us rest. Imagine a life of no worry or rush, as we, in child-like faith give all our anxiety to Jesus and let an all-loving, all-powerful God work in our circumstances, and in/through our life for our good and His glory. For more encouragement on this theme see GALATIANS 2:20-21; PHILIPPIANS 2:12-13; 4:4-8; 1 PETER 5:7
MATTHEW 12:12 "How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath."
The religious people in Jesus' day distorted God's truth, so that traditional religious duty (originally based on Scripture) was considered more important than helping people. Sometimes Christians today are accused of the same thing with sayings like, "He is so heavenly minded, he's no earthly good." It's actually impossible to be too heavenly minded! We are commanded in COLOSSIANS 3:1-2 to set both our hearts and minds firmly on heavenly things. Jesus Christ, who even secular historians have to admit has done more earthly good than any other human being, was totally heavenly minded spending much time in prayer and doing or saying nothing until receiving orders from above on what to do or say. (See MARK 1:35; LUKE 6:12; JOHN 5:19; 8:28)
However, it is possible to be so religiously off balanced and/or hypocritical that we fail to love our fellow man, while thinking we are pleasing God. 1 JOHN 4:20 is clear. "If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen." May we be totally heavenly minded, wholly captivated by God's will for our lives, and may the world around us see our immense love for God by His love for them through us.
Welcome to the group, Hannah Jane and Martha Wright!! Great to have you joining us! Feel free to share insights, thoughts, questions, or anything you can think of that would help us in memorizing these verses and/or in getting to know, love and serve God better through these verses.

Peter, are you tring to cofuse me? It seems to me that this is your set B.
Here are my thoughts on one of my all-time favorite verses in the Bible - MATTHEW 13:44. What if a high % of Christians thought and acted like the man in this verse or like the guy in the movie "National Treasure" - actually believing that the Scripture; eternal, Spiritual truths; the love of our Savior; and our standing as a child of the King of the Universe are worth much, much more than just billions of dollars to be enjoyed for a mere up to 110 years here on earth (that so captivated Thomas Gates in "National Treasure")
MATTHEW 13:44 "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field."
What is this gospel? How valuable, practically speaking, is the Good News of Jesus Christ? It's very popular, in many circles, to get a little bit of God. We have to get enough so that someone can tell us "We are now '100% positive'? we are going to heaven", but not much more. After all, we all know Scripture and the things of God here on earth are not really as interesting as TV or the Internet, nor as exciting as sports or other worldly pursuits, and not as powerful, or trustworthy as the Almighty Dollar.
If we have this attitude, we may find ourselves deceived. There is not much, if any, difference between getting just $20 worth of the real God, and getting a $20 God (a man - made counterfeit that has no power either for this life or the life to come.) Jesus didn't come to give us a little bit of new Life in Him. He came to give us an abundance of His Life working powerfully in and through us. (see JOHN 10:10) We are reminded in today's verse, that the Gospel is a treasure of invaluable worth! May we wholeheartedly believe this, and pursue more and more of the Life of God in us.
LUKE 8:18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has (authentic Gospel treasure) will be given more; whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has (the $20 worth of God) will be taken from him.
Is the gospel really worth more than any other priceless treasure? To see this verse powerfully acted out in a play I wrote, go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=4E5im_ESP5Y

@Mr. Walker~ I... uh... err... well, I feel bad about doing this, I I'm deciding to back out of this project. However, I'm w/ SavedByGrace's group who is memorizing the whole Bible, so LORD-willing, I will eventually memorize all of these books. Again, I'm sorry!"

OCTSRIS, Thanks for giving the NTOYC a shot and for letting us know you are switching to focus on passages.
Here are my thoughts on MATTHEW 14:30 and 15:8. I would love feedback or others' insights or thoughts.
MATTHEW 14:30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"
"What am I doing?" People don't just walk on water. "I'd be safer back in the boat." "How well do I really know this Jesus? Am I sure I heard Him correctly?"
To be a Christian is to be born again into a new life, filled with new God ordained adventures (See EPHESIANS 2:10) The new can be scary. How often do we look back, longing for the familiar, comfortable slavery of our sinful pride and habits (just like the Israelites of old kept wanting to go back to slavery in Egypt?)
God calls all of us to radically trust Him in one area or another. This will be impossible (there will be too many scary doubts, sights, and sounds) unless we keep our eyes on Jesus who has called us, and who Himself is living the miraculous life He calls us to participate in. Remember, He who calls you to radically step out in faith is faithful and He will work in and through you to do what He calls you to. (See 1 THESSALONIANS 5:24). Remember also, that Peter, who tried to walk on water and failed miserably is the same Peter who God used to write Scripture and to lead the powerful New Testament church. There is no substitute for authentic faith that says, "I will get to know God is real, and learn to trust Him, no matter how many times I fail in my pursuit."
MATTHEW 15:8 "These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me."
Make no mistake about it. God knows our heart. (LUKE 16:15; JOHN 5:42; ACTS 15:8) And to a large extent, we don't know our own heart. JEREMIAH 17:9 says, "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" There is a big emphasis in our church culture on saying the right things, and teaching our children to say they believe the right things. What about the heart? Our emotions, our will, our desires, our passions, our motivation. All these are wrapped up in our heart, and our heart is what God is after.
The fool says in his heart, "There is no God" (PSALM 14:1) With his lips, he says whatever he has been trained to say, but in his heart, he says, "I'll run my own life, thank you. I'll be my own god. On the outside, I will fulfill some religious duty to appease others, but on the inside, no one will rule my heart."
O God, save us from this hypocrisy. May we pray as David did, "Search me, O God, and know my heart..." (PSALM 139:23) and then when He shows us our sin, "Create in me a pure heart..." (PSALM 51:10) May today's verse never be said of us, that the world may see those who profess the name of Jesus as wholeheartedly devoted to and captivated by Christ.

Welcome to the group, Rhea, great to have you joining us.
Here are my thoughts on MATTHEW 16:26. I would love everyone's feedback and insights.
MATTHEW 16:26 "What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?"
A few years back there was a Country song entitled, "I want to have it all" with the lyrics describing the "perfect" life of having and experiencing everything worth having and experiencing...without God. What if you could "have it all" here on earth. What would that look like? The Bible teaches us clearly that this temporary world has nothing in it that can compare with glorious eternal truths. (See 2 CORINTHIANS 4:16-18)
Can that be true? The temporal things of this world often seem so shiny, enticing, satisfying, pressing, addictive, important, lasting, consuming. Peter warns us that our prideful, sinful desire to buy into this world's system of things actually wars against our soul and can lead to us missing out to one degree or another on the One who alone can truly satisfy.
O God, may we have Your eyes to see this world and eternity the way You see them so that we can feed our soul both for our own eternal good and that we may be an eternal blessing to others you put in our lives.
It is hard to think of MATTHEW 16:26 without remembering Jim Elliott's quote which he lived and died by: "He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose."

Here are my thoughts on MATTHEW 17:23 and 18:35. As always, I would love everyone's feedback and insights.
MATTHEW 17:23 "They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life." And the disciples were filled with grief."
Filled with grief? Why weren't the disciples rejoicing? Their leader was more powerful than death, He was about to prove it, and they would all get to see it. Sounds like exciting news to me.
At least one reason the disciples were sorrowful was they really didn't believe Jesus would rise from the dead. They knew He was special and powerful, but even special people don't just rise from the dead. It's a shame that even Jesus' enemies put more stock in His claims to rise from the dead than His followers. (MATTHEW 27:63-66; LUKE 24:9-12)
MATTHEW 18:35 "This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart."
This parable in MATTHEW 18:21-35 is one of the most radical in the Scriptures. It appears to be saying God might take back the forgiveness he gave us. This doesn't sit well with the concept of God many of us have. We will let the theologians argue out the difficult issues and focus on two truths that are crystal clear.
1) God takes our responsibility to forgive others very seriously (See MATTHEW 6:14-15)
2) We are to freely forgive as ones who have been forgiven of immeasurably more than we could ever be wronged by.
O God, may I clearly see my sinful heart and the fullness of all you went through on the cross to forgive one so vile. And may I forgive as you forgave (See EPHESIANS 4:32 and COLOSSIANS 3:13) and as one who has been gloriously forgiven.

Mr. Walker:
Sometimes we suddenly ask each other "What does ____________ say?", to help review. I'm not sure if that counts as quizzing, but it does help us, especially with remembering the references for the verses, etc.
My favorite verse so far in Matthew is probably Matthew 1:21, because it is so amazing that Jesus came to earth to "save His people from their sins." Matthew 3:8 is also a favorite, because of its challenge: "Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance."
Time to do some more declaring! Oh, and yes, I do have a way that I'm going about declaring verses and remembing which ones I've done (underlining once I've memorized it, and highlighted it once I've declared it)...since so many of them are just all around in the list :)

Katrina, good idea to use your brother's cards to keep track. I hope these verses help you for the Bible Bee and beyond.
Here are my thoughts on MATTHEW 19:6. No time like the present to reconfirm your convictions about marriage and against divorce.
MATTHEW 19:6 "So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."
One of the saddest facts and strongest condemnations of our church is that divorce and remarriage (to someone other than the one we vowed before God to let nothing but death separate us from) is as common among the professing church in the USA as among those who reject God.
Today's verse uses powerful language. Not only does divorce and remarriage break our vows before God; our flippant regard for marriage actually rejects God's work and His divine everlasting plan for marriage. We didn't just choose to join our spouse, God put us together!! Our supernatural union is a picture of Jesus Christ and His church. (See EPHESIANS 5:22-33)
I don't personally know the right balance between God's utter hatred of divorce. (See MALACHI 2:13-16) and God's immeasurable grace for those involved in divorce and remarriage. I have friends who feel the modern church's departure from the Biblical and the historically Christian view on marriage is the chief reason for our lack of power and effectiveness in our culture. I have other friends who have divorced and remarried who I care about deeply and would consider more spiritual than myself.
One thing I do know. In the beginning, God made male and female to be supernaturally joined into one. (See GENESIS 2:21 - 24) What God has joined together, let not professing Christians separate! May God give you the grace to rejoice always in the wife of your youth (see PROVERBS 5:18)
I guess I'm a little late, but I'm joining! I will have to work hard to catch up with the rest of you! :)

Hello everyone - apparently Mr. Walker signed me up for the project here about three months ago- I found out today so from the verses I already have--
Simeon B Set A Matt 5:16; 10:28; 11:28 Mark 10:45 John 1:12 Acts 4:12; 16:31 Gal 2:20 Eph 2:10 1 Timothy 4:12!
Mr. Walker although it was without my knowledge, I shall consent, and may all others bewareful.
Simeon, I did not intentionally sign anyone up without their knowledge. Sorry for any misunderstanding. However, it is great to see you joining us. Can I ask what state you are from?
Great job to everyone in keeping up with these Scriptures. I will be taking them on soon in Indonesian in addition to English.
I will soon be closing www.scripture-memory-support.org and just finished copying the list of verses typed out in the 1984 NIV, KJV, NKJ, NASB and ESV. You can still copy these yourself at www.scripture-memory-support.org/newtestament.html. After the website is closed you can get the list of your choice by emailing me at philjohn1558@yahoo.com

Wow. I'm sorry to say that I forgot all about this. I'll have to get back into it... I think the extra memorizing I did earlier in the year will really help though. Good job everybody for continuing the project!
I think this sounds like a good idea. I guess I am getting a late start but I will try to catch up. Here is the information you wanted:
Isaac H NC NIV.
BTW- What are the letters for beside the peoples bible versions on the chart?
@Isaac--The letters are the individual ten-verse declarations from each person. When you have memorized ten verses, you get an A, with twenty, you get a B, etc, up to the letter Z. :)
Isaac, most are using the chosen verses, but we will include you with picking other verses. Let us know the references for the first 10 you memorize to get the A, as explained by SavedByGrace.
Great job, Leah and Bethany for staying with the verses. Your charts have been updated.
Here are my verse references:
A= Matthew 1:21, Matthew 2:3, Matthew 3:1, Matthew 4:23, Matthew 5:2, Matthew 6:1, Matthew 7:1, Matthew 8:1, Matthew 9:2, Matthew 10:1.
Thanks Isaac, you're on the chart. Great to see you joining us. I trust the verses you memorize will be powerful in your life and inspire you to know even more of the chapter.
I think that Mr. Walker thought you were declaring them by listing them. It might work better to give the references after you've memorized them, that way it can count as your declaration and verse listing and not be confusing. That's just my advice though...
SoulWinner, great to see you joining us. When you have memorized your first 10 verses, please give us your first name, first initial of your last name and the state you are from.
Isaac, sorry for the confusion. I took off the A. Let us know when you have memorized those. We work by honor system, and you can declare them memorized before they are counted as memorized in the Memverse system..
Isaac, your A is back on. Congratulations on getting started. Let us know when you memorize the next 10 verses for the B.

The World Choir Games went really well! We met a lot of Indonesians, and they were very excited to get tracts in their own language.
Isaac, whole chapters sounds great. AstroLeah, glad to hear that the World Choir Games went well and that you were able to use the tracts. I trust God will speak through them to the hearts of the recipients. How did it feel doing something that you could get arrested for if you did it on Indonesia soil (although Americans handing out tracts would probably be given the benefit of the doubt and simply asked to stop, then warned, then deported before going to jail. It is much more dangerous for local Indonesian Christians to hand out tracts.)
Great to see you continuing with the New Testament One Year Challenge. I love the 10 new verses you picked.

Mr. Walker - It was so wonderful getting to share the Gospel with those who might otherwise have never been reached! In fact, we met some Indonesian Christians at the Games who had never seen anyone on the street openly witnessing to people before. I would absolutely love to be a missionary to Indonesia!
Also, how are Dhesthielyn and Rhea doing? Do you know it they got the birthday cards I sent them?

The youtube link for 1 Korintus 15:58 is www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSUaEWSmFGY. Our theme song we sing often and after each Scripture listening session is Yohanes 15:7-8 www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ0phfrtDIY or www.youtube.com/watch?v=6R28YoutoBQ
Leah, that sounds like quite an impressive itinerary. Do you have dates linked with the visit. We are less than 30 minutes from the airport, so if you even have a short layover in Jakarta, on most days unless our schedule did not permit, we would love to bring some students and meet you to let you hear the songs and chat a little with the students in person. If you have a few hours, you could visit the school, or if you can spare a day or two, join the students and see a little of what STT Setia is all about.
