Is dancing wrong?

Well, don't worry… I much prefer the laid-back Irish "etiquette". ;) And the dances are way better too. :P

GMOV's ballet/dance company is very careful to make sure that all of the girls' costumes are totally modest. They are nothing like the typical ballet dancers that you'd see. So if that's your only problem with ballet, then it wouldn't apply here.

When I did ballet, my teacher was a Christian, she taught real ballet (one problem with most Christian teachers is that they don't teach real ballet), and she had beautiful, modest costumes.

Because boys don't like dancing (at least more girls like dancing than boys). My older and younger brother didn't dance at the Nationals square dance but I couldn't wait for it! :)

Boys don't like feeling awkward. And, dancing invites more opportunities for awkwardness than most anything else. Dancing is a fun experience. The steps leading up to the actual act of dancing can be and are awkward. Big diff. :P

To me, the very concept of dancing is awkward, not just the steps leading up to it. :P

Personally, I don't feel at all awkward dancing with girls, asking them to dance, escorting them on/off the floor, etc. Then again, I rarely feel awkward, so that probably doesn't mean anything. And really, when it comes to Contra Dancing, the guys really have an advantage. First, the guy gets to ask the girl to dance. That means he gets to choose which girl he asks, whereas the girl has to dance with the first guy who asks her, or else sit out. Also, the girls always get the harder steps (like the ladies chain, for instance).

I tend to have the mindset of "it's not awkward unless you think it's awkward", and I simply choose not too. It really helps. :)

Girls have the ability to say this two-letter word called "no". Asking her to dance is awkward. Getting rejected is awkward and embarrassing. I rest my case.

One of my friends once told me that it is a lot easier to embarrass girls then guys. Guys can shrug it off… girls carry it with them everywhere. I don’t know if it’s true or not because I’ve only seen things from the girl perspective. :)

That's probably because you haven't done it enough. :) It can be awkward at first, but it won't be once you get used to it (which takes longer for some people than others). And if she already has a partner for the next dance, why should it be awkward for you if she says so? I know it can feel embarrassing, but there's really no reason for it. Also, if you look awkward it makes the girl feel even more awkward to say 'no'. Can I get a confirmation from one of you girls? :)

Hear, Hear. :) Interestingly enough, from my experience I've noticed that even though guys are more reluctant to dance in the first place, a higher percentage of guys than girls are surprised at how fun it is, and keep on doing it. The hard thing is getting them there in the first place.

We have that problem in our choir, too :P
