I don't currently have any recording devices, or else I would. You can find all sorts of good singing on youtube, if you have access.
biblebee
Ah okay :-(
In reply to your edit: YAY!! I can't wait :-)
Sarah B.
Well, the problem is more that I don't know what to look for on YouTube…
Seth W.
It's not really a 'what they're doing wrong' as much as it is 'what could they do better'. But without actually seeing you sing, the best I could do is make an educated guess, but I don't know if I could explain it to you very well over the internet. :/
Seth W.
Uh-oh, now everyone's expecting a masterpiece. Don't get your hopes up too much…
biblebee
Okay. So, do you have any links/books/videos that you could tell me about so I can try to teach myself?
Sarah B.
We wont… but we'll expect it to better then what we're do now! :)
biblebee
I won't get my hopes up but I sure you'll do REALLY good!! =]
Seth W.
Unfortunately, no - I've never used a book for learning how to sing, and I really don't know of any. I'm sure they're out there, I just have never really seen one myself.
Seth W.
haha- that seems like a contradiction. :)
biblebee
Well I guess it could technically be a contradiction…
In reply to your first comment: Ah, okay. I'll look online then.
Sarah B.
So who taught you to sing (or is that top secret information)? :)
Seth W.
While we're on the subject of singing/music, I just have to post a few of my favorite choral arrangements. :)
One of my favorite arrangers

One that choir at church is working on;

A fun up-beat one that I also like

biblebee
Ohhh…I'll listen to these later whenI get on the right computer :-)
Seth W.
No, that's not top-secret. :) The only singing lessons I've had are college, my teacher's name is [deleted].
Sarah B.
I'm listening to it now. They are really, really good! That's all I'll say… don't want to spoil it for you!
Seth W.
Actually, the first time I ever really sang was at BB Nationals in 2011 for the Opening Ceremony. I really liked it, and kept doing more similar stuff, and now I'm a vocal music major. Another reason I'm a huge Bible Bee fan. :)
biblebee
Haha! Okay. I can't wait to hear them!!
Seth: Do you like rap music?
Sarah B.
Thank you so much! I'll probably listen to these songs 10000 times for the next few weeks! Goodbye Grooveshark! LOL
biblebee
Haha!!
Gtg. Nice talking with y'all!
Seth W.
Haha- if you want more I can send them. :)
Sarah B.
Oh, please do! :) I like the "Servant In Your Heavenly House" best… but they are all so good! Thank you!
Seth W.
I like that one too - especially the polyphonic part near the end (where it's kind of like there's 3 different melodies going on at the same time).
Here's another one by the same arranger as "Then Sings my Soul". It's a pretty simple song, but I think it's beautiful.
http://listeninglab.stantons.com/title/high-and-lifted-up/423662/?s=1
Another one by Mary McDonald (by now you can probably tell I really like her music:))
http://listeninglab.stantons.com/title/at-calvary/421511/?s=1
This is a good example of a typical Joseph Martin song - minor, sad, beautiful, and hopeful all at the same time, with a triumphant ending.
http://listeninglab.stantons.com/title/empty-now/213438/?s=1
This one is currently my favorite arrangement of "How Firm a Foundation". Like "Empty Now", it's a good example of a typical Larry Shackley arrangement - with his typical bounciness and a characteristic piano accompaniment.
This one I sang in my one semester of homeschool choir, and really liked it. The only place I could find it is on youtube;
If you want more, I have lots. :) Don't hesitate to ask.
Sarah B.
My favorite of those was Mary McDonald, "High and Lifted Up"! I liked your choir's singing as well. :) I really like them! Please do share more! I would love to here them if you have time to post them!
Seth W.
Oh, that's not my choir singing, that's just the same song we sang. :)
I really like "High and Lifted Up" too. That's funny that out of all those you picked the two songs that we're singing in choir - we have similar music tastes. I'll post some more later - I'm in the middle of filling out an application right now. can't believe that someone actually wants to hear all these songs - usually I can't get people to listen to them :)
biblebee
Oh…thanks so much for sharing these pieces!! I really like them!!!
Sarah B.
Well, it was still good…even if it was lacking your voice. :)
Haha- that may be because I’m hungry for good singing… I have been inspired! Thank you!
Sarah B.
Since you told me your background with singing I guess I could tell you mine. :) My mom grew up in a church that sang only Psalms acapella. That is how she taught them to me when I was very little, so I greatly enjoy vocals. I am a very high soprano but I don’t often sing as high as I could because I lack confidence and know-how to sing those parts (you know what I mean?).
biblebee
I wish I was high soprano. What is your singing range?
Sarah B.
I really don’t know. All I know is that mom thinks I’m high soprano… (someone else told me that too but I can’t remember who it was right now).
Edit- Hmm… now that I think about it, this could be mistaken information. Maybe I’m just soprano… it's not like an expert has told me I’m “high soprano”. I guess I really don’t know that for sure. Sorry. (I would need someone like Seth to tell me that to know for sure! LOL)
biblebee
Okay. I don't know mine either…
Hiruko Kagetane
I dont even know what any of those mean. Except bass.
biblebee
Google is your friend.
Hiruko Kagetane
Google is your friend.
………………Okay. It's official. You're way more similar to me than I give you credit for. 100 points for being deviously awesome.
biblebee

Hahahahahaha!!!!! Thanks :-)
Seth W.
I could really use some high sopranos in choir- we're rather lacking in high voices, both guys and girls. :)
Sarah/Carissa - If you want my input, go to a piano and go up from middle C and tell me how you can comfortably sing - don't try to go as high as you possibly can if starts hurting, but where you think you can hit the right note (even if it's not perfectly). Then start at middle C and go down. Tip- you may be able to sing some of the high notes easier if you relax, don't try to have a 'full-bodied' voice at the very top of your range. Try to keep your head level - don't raise your head on the high notes or drop it on the low notes, and keep your throat as relaxed as possible.
FYI, I'm a bass 2 (the lower bass), and my range is approximately an E above middle C down to about the E two octaves below. I can go about a fifth lower if necessary, but it loses musical quality when I go that low.
biblebee
Okay. I'll do that and then let you know. Thanks :-)
Seth W.
Sorry, Carissa, I just saw your question about rap music.
Not really, even though I don't hate it by any means. I guess I don't really consider it "music" for the most part. I haven't heard a lot of it, though, so I really can't say for certain. I certainly don't think that it's "evil" or "the devil's music" like some people do (for reasons that I can't understand). :P
biblebee
Okay.
Sarah B.
I certainly wouldn't mind joining your choir! :) The problem is…you know. :(
Thank you for the advice. I will try that next time I get a chance to use the piano (tomorrow probably).
I really like the sound of bass. I used to think it was rare to meet someone with a bass voice…?
His Servant
I'm very sorry, Noah. Not mean to harm you…please don't take it personal.
bows and leaves room, hoping to have made for peace with Noah
=D
(Carissa, it's fine…I know he's just having fun, like I like to do)
Sarah B.
Are you right-handed or left-handed? :) I'm left handed… except when I'm cutting something or I'm playing corn hole.
Seth W.
Who was that addressed to?
I'm right-handed. Even when playing corn hole. :)
biblebee
I'm right handed. What is "Playing Corn Hole"?
Sarah B.
Anyone. :) I thought you might be tired of me addressing lots of questions at you… so I just decided to throw one out there for anyone who wanted to answer.
You like corn hole much?
Carissa- Corn hole is a game with bean bags where you try to get them in the holes… I don't know why they call it that. :/
Emily H
I'm right-handed and I stink at corn hole or anything that involves throwing and actually having to hit something. In case you wanted to know. :P
biblebee
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh…………….yeah! That game!!! I do that right handed as well…but I'm dreadful at it!
Sarah B.
So of the songs Seth shared with us can you guess which one I'm listening to right now?
biblebee
The High and lifted up one?
Sarah B.
Nope. :)
