We're not (or at least not at this point)!
2 Corinthians 5:17
Depends on how many verses they give us, but I think I'll do the same. We have plenty of time after locals! Over 3 months! My mom and I were thinking last night about their releasing some of the Nats verses early. What if you're new and don't know if you're going to make it? Then you might not memorize them because you think since it's you're first year, you probably won't make it. But then what if you do make it; then you're behind everybody else, because they already memorized the verses that were released. ^*hopes that made sense* :P^I don't think I'll start studying the Nats verses until after I take the test...because they'll just distract me from studying for locals, and with the short space of time to do so in, I want to focus on locals.
IKR? :P Almost double the amount of time we had last year!
2 Corinthians 5:17
Nooooo! You can't! :P
We're still planning to participate this year. I think it's going to be a bumpy ride, but we'll make it through. As long as I can make it, I'll be okay. ;D
Febah M.
Good! ;)
2 Corinthians 5:17
How many years do you have left? :)
Febah M.
Two, after this year. But I'll probably be in college next fall, so not sure if I'll be able to continue competing :/
2 Corinthians 5:17
Okay. =( This will be my last. How many years have you qualified? :)
Febah M.
Aww =( All six, although I didn't go to Nats last year :'(
2 Corinthians 5:17
Cool! :) I've participated since 2011, but qualified for the first time last year.
Febah M.
Nice! Where are you from?
2 Corinthians 5:17
NC :) You?
Febah M.
NY :)
2 Corinthians 5:17
:)
Ever made semis?
Febah M.
And I must be going :( Talk to you later, Rachel!
2 Corinthians 5:17
Bye!!
Febah M.
Yes, in 2011 and 2012. I got out in the first round in '11 and made it through all the rounds in '12, but my score wasn't high enough to advance.
Febah M.
Bye!
2 Corinthians 5:17
Awesome :D
M27
She got Nehemiah 4:4-20 in semis in 2012. It was that year's longest passage. She got it perfect, and everyone was so excited for her (including me :))!
2 Corinthians 5:17
That's awesome :D She was a Junior, right?
M27
Yes.

One weird thing: they say that contestants with disabilities can take a non-timed test. I get that they need some extra time, but I think that they should still have a time limit. Anyways, hopefully it doesn't affect a lot of people.
Carissa: A lot of these changes were not asked for too. But at the same time we don't know how many options the staff had. I think everyone's got to be disappointed that they're not using the Sword Studies anymore. Also there's a lot less security on the testing. This is qualification for a National competition and all variables should be as minimized as possible. It's so easy to take a screenshot of the test, go to another browser window, or accidentally say something about it to your siblings. It was impossible to do those things in previous years; now it's way too easy. Not saying any of this is going to happen, but with the new changes I think the test security isn't strict enough.

I just wanted to point out that testing will only be on August 1st. They clarified that last night, and apologized for the error. Also, testing begins at 8am EDT and ends at 9pm PDT. The poor guy was typing so fast he got a few of the answers wrong :P
The website still says August 1-7 on the participation page, though.
Febah M.
That is really strange. Michael mentioned, though, that he had said it wrong somewhere else and that it was just on the 1st. I guess, what they mean is that if you are unable to take the test on the 1st, you may be able to take it sometime during that week, as a special case? Idk, just my guess.

I think that's exactly right. I understood it (after listening to the 2nd webinar) that the 1st is the official test date, but if you have very special circumstances, you can take it another day, but you have to contact HQ and work it out.

One big problem that I see with online testing is that way too much is based on the honor system. Yes, I know that many (maybe all) of the parents signing their children up for BB are Christians, but that doesn't mean that their children are. To some people, the Bible Bee isn't a big deal. I wouldn't have been terribly upset in 2012 if someone had cheated. Bible Bee wasn't important to me then. It was just something that I was doing during the summer. But for many of us, especially those of us who have been to Nationals, it matters a lot if someone cheats. This contest means so much to us, and there's no telling how many quarts of tears we would cry if we just barely missed Nationals because someone else cheated and qualified. I feel like some of the parents and children aren't going to realize this, so they may think that it's not a big deal if they help their children or peek into their Bibles during the test. Hopefully, there will be some way for SKF to make sure that no one cheats.
2 Corinthians 5:17
I kinda wish they'd bring the pastor thing back…I think that would create more accountability. I dunno.
M27
Yes…although if I had my pastor helping me I would probably do pretty well! :)
2 Corinthians 5:17
Lol! I know you wouldn't cheat, though. :)
M27
Haha! No, I'm too scared of being disqualified to do anything that I thought might disqualify me! :D
2 Corinthians 5:17
IKR? xD Me too XP

Our family isn't doing it anymore.
What?! But will you still be around to write Bible Bee Dr. Seuss poems that make us all smile for weeks :).
M27
You know, after thinking about everything for more than 24 hours, I'm not that worried about it. The changes are things that aren't convenient for me and take away pretty much all the self-confidence that I ever had, but the goal of the Bible Bee hasn't changed. Bible Bee still seeks to encourage families in studying God's Word. The changed may mean that it is harder for me to qualify for Nationals or get as high of a rank as I would like, but if others are encouraged to seek the Lord more through the Bible Bee, isn't it worth it? Let's just trust God that He knows what is best, even if this means no more Bible Bee.
I still am having a hard time understanding SKF's decision, but maybe they'll write an explanation.

I am unofficially joining the small faction of radicals who order Mrs. McMahan's Sword Study and study it the good old-fashioned way on paper, and working ahead, and all. The sword study will likely evoke some poetry (as it always has), so if you are also in this small faction of reactionaries, you may understand my poetry, if not, it will probably mostly go over your head. Besides, I am an alumni, so I should be able to exercise my right to retire.
2 Corinthians 5:17
Yup. Sleeping on it has definitely helped me. XD Although I reallllllyyyyyyy want to want to qualify, and now am not sure how I'm going to study with this new format, I'm seeking to trust the Lord and let HIS will be done. And if I qualify, hurrah! And if I don't, I know that's what the Lord wants for me. At least I can watch the webcast. (And cry… ;) )

That's great! I might order one of their Sword Studies (after BB). Anyway, you'll have to tell us what the book is when you find out, as that will eliminate one possibility for what us contestants will be studying :).
Esther Grace
Then I'm a radical too. :) Our host decided to have a small study group for the Sword Study instead of doing Bible Bee, so we'll be joining them.

The Davises aren't doing Bible Bee?!?!
2 Corinthians 5:17

Nope. :(
2 Corinthians 5:17
Whoa… =(
M27
Whoa... =(
Do you know about the Cs (Bethany)?
Dani(elle)
Can some one explain this? :P I'm confused as to why the switch is happening and why we no longer getting sword studies etc.??????
Everett C.
Well, they changed leadership so there's new people running it. Apparently they can't use the Sword Studies for some unknown reason so they have to make their own study guide. They also have to move the Local date up and shorten the summer program because of the new study guide. Also everyone has to take the test online and they might release the Nationals verses early in the summer. They're not giving reasons behind the changes.
Dani(elle)
ok so no one knows why?
2 Corinthians 5:17
Cooksey? No, what?
Everett C.
Only a few know, but I don't think they want to disclose that information right now.
Rachelle
We're going to re-takeover the Bible Bee!
2 Corinthians 5:17
