Volunteer to Verify Verses

Time Posted on January 10, 2011 User Andy

As both the number of users and the number of translations has grown, we have more and more memory verses being entered each week. After returning from Christmas we realized that the number of verses that need verification had become very daunting. So there is now a new page where you can help verify verses.

The page takes a while to load but you will get a list of the verses in your translation that haven't yet been checked. There are instructions on the page on how to do this. Once you have made any corrections, the verse will go to a final verification step. We have been testing this out with some early volunteers and it has already dramatically reduced the time we spend correcting verses.

Over time, we will add alerts for when there are verses that need to be checked. For now, NIV and a couple of the other major translations are already up to date.

P.S. We're thrilled at the response to the referral competition. We have a record number of new users the past two weeks.

There aren't any verses showing up at all after waiting for two full minutes……Is everything already taken care of??

River - if the page loads and nothing other than the headings show up then everything is already verified. Also, I think you're using ESV which means they're always verified.

For NIV, will it specify 1984 / 2010 copyright?

@AmyV - If your account is set for the NIV 1984, that's what you would get to verify; if it is set for NIV 2010, you get those verses. (Right, Andy?)

Here's a question I've had, even while just entering verses on a regular basis:

Do we preserve the format of poetry-type passages? For example, Psalm 23:1 (NASB) says:

The LORD is my shepherd,
I shall not want.

Is this how we enter it? Or should it be:

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.

Thanks!

I think it should be the latter. :)

Very happy to help. I have two Bibles: one that is in columns and treats every verse as a paragraph, therefore putting a quotation in front of each verse; and one that is written in paragraph form and only puts quotations at the front of a whole set of verses in paragraph. It makes verifying the quotation marks tricky.

MemVerse generally uses www.BibleGateway.com as a standard for what the text should be. Thank you!

What if an NIV verse is not even correct reference?
there is listed 1 John 1:14 (not even a verse) and it looks like someone tried to type John 1:14 in a different translation. I deleted the actual text of the verse but the reference is still there.
How do you delete a verse entirely from the system?

why do some serses in a passage get seperated from each other when they are given in memorize? Like Genesis 12:1-2 is never given at the same time as Genesis 12:3 even when they have the same interval and were entered at the same time?
I have several verses that do the same thing.
EDIT: also 2 Cor 4: 18 is always seperate from 2 Cor 4:16-17
Anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

I'd like to note something...

As you may know, there are two versions of the NIV on MemVerse: the 1984 and the 2010. In order to distinguish, MemVerse calls the 1984 version "NIV" and the 2010 version "NNV" (new NIV), if I'm not mistaken.

This came to my attention because I saw that somebody had changed a verse from the 1984 NIV ("NIV" on MemVerse) to its 2010 translation ("NNV" on MemVerse). This would generally make sense elsewhere, but on MemVerse, some people still want to memorize NIV 1984, so they are kept seperate.

I hope I don't come off the wrong way, I just want to clarify things!

A few comments

- You should only be verifying verses in your chosen translation so if you've picked NIV (1984) then you'll only see those verses. The 2010 edition of the New International Version is referred to as NNV.
- The new lines (carriage returns) in poetry should be removed.
- 1 John 1:14 has been removed. These don't crop up too often and I'll soon have a check that prevents out of range verses.
- Please use www.BibleGateway.com as the reference standard as far as possible. There are plenty of errors on Biblegateway, though, so if you suspect something is incorrect, verify it on www.youversion.com.
- In general, there should be a quotation mark at the start of each verse in long quotes.

earlier I thought that as long as I copied and pasted from Biblegateway when adding the verses that they would be entered correctly. However, I just noticed that for me at least, the "LORD" in caps gets pasted as "Lord" and I have to go back and correct it. I'm not sure why. Watch out for that when adding verses from the OT!

I have two of my verses (in NIV) that have been "pending verification" for months now, but I don't see them on the checking verses page. Could they have fallen through the cracks and gotten missed, since the NIV is supposed to be up-to-date?

@Marie Ann - I didn't see your comment until now. Are you sure interval is the same? Even if they are the same now, possibly you rated the verses differently or were having trouble with one at the beginning (rating it lower, like a 1 or 2) and it got "off sync" with the rest of the passage. (You could confirm this by looking at the Next Test Date and the eFactor.)

I have the same problem as Laura with two of my verses - they are Psalm 66:20 and Ecclesiastes 9:10 in the KJV. I even looked at my sister's account and found no verses to verify there either.

@Marie Ann - I think maybe that your problem is because you did not add the verses in at the same time? Just a thought. :)

Everyone has done a phenomenal job of verifying verses and all the verses have been checked. There are currently a lot of verses that are checked but I still have to verify. The reason I have to verify them is that I have a tool which compares them with multiple sources and then flags discrepancies.

Unfortunately, the tool is not perfect and gets caught up on small things like the difference between quotation marks that are angled and straight (!). That means I have to check them once more.

Sheri pointed out the problem with 'Lord' and 'LORD' and my guess is that people's browsers are somehow correcting the all caps version to 'Lord' because a lot of the verses that have been corrected still have the problem. Either that or there are bibles out there with it incorrect.

EDIT: I just saw your post, Andy - maybe it's just that you haven't checked my verse yet? I guess you have to verify it completely before it says "Verified" on my page? The problem with the verse is that the period was left out at the end. Just a small typo, it's not bothering me!

Courtney - The link is http://www.memverse.com/check_verses. Andy put it in the post--"help verify verses" links there. I miss stuff like that, too! Don't be afraid to ask, though. :) Some translations have active users constantly verifying, especially NIV it seems, so if you click the link and there is nothing to verify, just keep checking. Or, maybe you have a translation that very few people are helping with. :)

Question: What should we do if BibleGateway and Youversion conflict? Check it against another site, such as http://www.biblestudytools.com/? Or just go with BibleGateway? Because it seems that it would be a waste of time to go to Youversion when it would be overridden anyway.

Proverbs 12:22
Isaiah 2:18
Isaiah 29:19
1 Corinthians 11:3
1 Corinthians 11:15
Revelation 21:1
Revelation 22:7
I also have 2 pending verification but, I just added them today and they don't pop up to be verified. They are:

Nikki - It is OK for verses to be editable, that just means you are the only user in KJV that has them in your account. Another possibility Alex & Nikki - quoting myself on this one...

I just saw your post, Andy - maybe it's just that you haven't checked my verse yet? I guess you have to verify it completely before it says "Verified" on my page?

I didn't get a straight answer on that one, so that may or may not be the case. I just checked on the verification page on my account (by the way, I use KJV) and no verses came up. It could very well be that the verses were already verified, though. Are they Nikki? If they aren't, then somebody must have verified them not exactly the right way, and Andy will have to do the final verification.

Andy, I'm having the same trouble. Is it possible it's NKJV only? I think Zachary is NKJV, but I don't know about Marie. It seems ok when I just click the final "ok" but if I try to make a change (click on the link that opens the little edit box), it's when I hit *that* "ok" I am sent VERY briefly (one second) to the log-in screen then to a blank screen that just tries to load (line at the bottom says: Read s3.amazonaws.com) and never succeeds. Then when I hit the back button, it takes me to my previous screen, but I am no longer logged in.

If I just click "OK" on a verse to confirm that there are no corrections to be made, without making any changes, without opening the "edit" box, there is no problem. I just checked to make sure.

Nikki,
I believe that after NIV, KJV is actually the most popular version to memorize in on Memverse. I memorize in King James. You are able to verify verses that are your own (I've done it before). I think your problem is the same one I'm encountering - in that the page for verification doesn't load. I believe Andy is working on this problem.

Concerning the grammar of the verses being checked, do we label words in italics with brackets like this - as God [did] from his. ~ Heb. 4:10c
- or plain text like this -
as God did from his. ` Heb. 4:10c
- or some other way???
(did is the word in italics)

Is it possible for memverse to have the whole KJV Bible verified and open for memorization? Or do we have to enter the verses, and then verify them?

@Super401 - I'm not positive, but I think you would have to enter all the verses manually. Of course, if there is someone with a lot of time on their hands, they could enter every KJV verse that's not in the system. I think that verses can be verified once at least two people have the verse in their account.

Luke 6:20 verse 20 Looking at his disciples, he said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. 23 “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets. 24 “But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. 25 Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets. Love for Enemies 27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. 32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Judging Others 37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” 39 He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher. 41 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. A Tree and Its Fruit 43 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. The Wise and Foolish Builders 46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” no not right! it is 49 verses
