2013 Bible Bee Quizzes

Would you like to join fellow Bible Bee students around the country for some practice competition and online encouragement? Bible Bee quizzes are back this summer (see below for full schedule and links to each quiz).
What to expect: You will have verses to recite in your own version (whatever you have chosen in your Account -> Profile), multiple choice questions based on 1 John (like the Written Test), and a few reference questions (where we give the text and you give the reference).
You don't even have to be registered for the Bible Bee to come to the quiz. Just practice material through the current week and you'll be ready!
Before each quiz, you'll probably want to get setup about 15 minutes early to make sure everything is working for you.

Ian, Lady Arwen is correct.
Bethany, if you click the link to go to the quiz, you can see a counter which will tell you how many days and hours it is away. I looked up ND time zone, but it looks like there's two. If you're Mountain Time, then you're two hours behind the Eastern, so it'd be 2:00 p.m.; if you're Central Time, then you're only one hour behind, hence 3:00 p.m.
:( Unfortunately, I can't come to this quiz. I have work today from 10 to 5. And I'm not sure how soon there will be a Friday that I do have free. But I hope to be able to join in on these whenever I do have the chance! :)
@Alex - thanks. :) I just wasn't sure because when I was on the quiz page yesterday, it looked like it would start at 2:00 for me, but when I checked this morning, it does show that it will be at 3:00. (I am in Centeral Time)
Post Quiz Notes:
- We found a few issues in this quiz and would like to try to work them out. We'll be having a re-run on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. EDT. If you experienced bugs or weren't able to make the quiz (or just want to do it again!), please come.
- If you experienced a bug but I didn't acknowledge it (there was a lot going on in the chat), please use the Feedback tab to let us know so we can try to fix it before Wednesday.
- The next quiz (with new content) will be next Friday, July 12, at 4:00 p.m. EDT. Some of the verses will have to be repeats, because there are less verses to choose from this year, but we'll be thinking up new multiple choice questions.

Alex - on the Proverbs 28:13-14 question, I typed in "always" which is on the Bible Bee card but I think it was "alway" in the system because it registered fourteen points. Unless I made another mistake somewhere... Oh yeah this is in the KJV.

How did it go? I'm sorry I missed it!!! I meant to get on but totally forgot about it in the midst of an "intense" water balloon fight...please tell me there will be another one next week!!! I don't want to miss another quiz. :(
Annaylsa- see Alex Watts post above. Yes, there will be another quiz next week, and on Wednesday, there will be a rerun of today's test, so since you missed, it, you can still do it! :) I
One problem that I had was that it wouldn't display my chat messages. I had to use my other account. (So not a big deal for me, but others may have had the same problem). Thanks!
Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to make it next Wedensday (on account of teaching piano lessons), but I'm planning to be there again Friday and looking forward to it! Thank you again!

One problem I had was I came in late and missed the first question, and the spot where they were supposed to be was blank, and I think that's what made me miss the second. It finally came on, though, which I was really glad of! :)
Has any of the NKJV-ers checked the passages to make sure that they are according to the Bible Bee Bible???
And on Wednesday, will it just be taking the quiz over again with the people who want review it? (Like it was on Friday?)

Hey Rachel - didn't know you were on Memverse! How are you? Can't wait to "see" you all at the quizzes. I *hope* I'll be able to make it on Wednesday...My mom has something scheduled but we don't know if it'll work out...
Hi Analyssa. :) I just got signed up on Friday right before quiz time. :) We're doing pretty good...we're in Redding, CA and it's really, really hot, but we're trying to get an appointment today to go swimming. ;) I'm not sure if we'll make it on Wednesday, either. I think we might go to my Aunt's house and ride horses for the day...I'm not sure, though.
I just found out that I might be able to make it tomorrow after all! Some of my piano students cancelled, so I should be able to make it! Yay!
I probably can't come to the quiz tomorrow either :( :( We have piano lessons that time :(

Rachel - Yes, it will be identical to the one Friday, except that I corrected one of the multiple-choice questions, and we're testing a new system for delivering the chat messages and quiz questions.

Everyone - Please make sure that your profile (click here) is set to use NKJV, KJV, NASB, or ESV 2011 (NOT ESV 2007), or some quiz questions will not work. (This applies not only to today's quiz, but to all the quizzes.) In a future update, we may alert you during the quiz if you have not set your version correctly, but for now we just need everyone to check themselves. (If you were unable to answer the recitation questions, this is why.) Thank you!
BTW, the countdown timer has been fixed too, so you won't be sweating because you don't know how much time is left (though you may still sweat) :)

We won't be able to make it today. :( We're riding horses at my Aunt's right at the time of the quiz, but we'll make it on Friday!
I would love to do this quiz today but I probably won't be able to make it. :( Since it's not raining today, we will probably go hand out tracts and VBS flyers for our church... oh well - hopefully I'll be here on Friday! :)

Alex: Will the verses be according to the Bible Bee memory cards? Because last time, I typed "always" on Proverbs 28:13-14 (KJV), which is on the BB card, but it registered as wrong, my Bible says "alway", unless I made a mistake elsewhere.

Huh? It seems to me that the Bible itself claims that it has sugar in it: "[The statutes of the Lord] are sweeter than honey." (Psalm 19:10) See?? ;D

If anyone had an issue with the quiz, please let me know in the comments. I know Everett said he got one of the questions twice, and someone else said they missed one question, but overall it seems like it went better than last time.

All - Someone asked me if they'd be able to submit question ideas for this year's quizzes, and the answer is now.... yes! If you have ideas, you can submit them via this form. Just please don't spill the beans by sharing them with anyone else ahead of time.

@Alex~ Thank you! I'm assuming there's no time limit that determines which ideas get picked, right? You just choose the ones you like best? I ask because I submitted two questions, so if the only ones that get picked are the ones given before a certain time, then you'll want to remove one of them so someone else also gets a chance. :-)
OCTSRIS - All the responses go into a spreadsheet, and I am just beginning to go through them now. There are enough for this quiz and to get us started on another one. Everyone can send questions indefinitely, though if I get 200, I probably won't be able to use them all. However, it would make it a lot easier for me to make more quizzes.
Just so you're all aware, I won't be at the quiz, but it should work just like it did last time. Chat will open 10 minutes before and close 10 minutes after. If anyone has trouble, leave a comment and we'll look into it later. And if anyone is having trouble with submitting recitations or reference questions, please tell them to choose one of the four Bible Bee versions (remember that NIV and ESV 2007 aren't available) under Account -> Profile and then reload the quiz. Thanks!

The roster is messed up for me. It still says there are three quizzers (Alex, Turin Tarambar, and me.) I don't really care about that, though. Just thought you might want to know.
i bet a ton of people already mentioned this ALEX but the clock had a bug where it stayed frozen untill you refreshed?

Hey, just wondered if you could possibly vary the quiz times. My brother and I would love to come, but since we are in China 4:00 p.m. ETD is 4 in the morning for us.
Could you maybe have one in the evening? Like 7 or 8 p.m.? So if would be possible for us to come...

Rachel, I don't believe there was supposed to be a quiz today. The only reason there was a quiz last Wednesday was because the previous Friday's quiz had some bugs. The next quiz scheduled as far as I know is next Friday, July 26.
I will have to miss it because I am going to be at my friends house and then at a play.
Just to let you guys know, I have a film camp to go to on Friday and Saturday so I won't be able to be here for this quiz. :( Do you think we could do a repeat on the quiz for those who have to miss it?
Christiana - To delete verses, you can use the My Verses page, check the boxes for the verses you want to delete, and scroll to the bottom. There's a button for deleting there.
Alternatively, if you just want to make verses "Pending" so they don't come up for review, with the intent of memorizing them later, you can click "Learning" or "Memorized" and it will switch to "Pending."

The quiz wouldn't let me answer the verse questions even though I refreshed it twice. And the first time I refreshed it it wouldn't show the questions, and the chat didn't come up. :(
Ian - Your account was set to ESV 2007, which I changed to ESV 2011 so it should work next time. Sorry for the trouble. There will be a check next time that will let you know if you're not using a compatible version.
NASB users - Looks like question #10 (John 17:3) was incorrect in your version, with an extraneous "And" at the beginning of the verse. This has been fixed for future quizzes. Thanks to Anna for the catch.
All - There was interest in re-running this quiz at the same time next Friday, August 2. If you want to do it again, see you then; otherwise, see you the following Friday, which will be new content.

@All - One thing... I submitted the question about the occurrences of "hamartia" and the answer was actually wrong. :( When I submitted the question, I looked up just the word "sin" in the Strong's concordance, but I realized just now there's also more occurrences of "hamartia" under "sins". Sorry about that....
Andrew - Understandable. Thanks for sharing. Since this question has gotten so much press, I'll remove it from Friday's re-run (everyone would know the answer).
Justin - There are two upcoming quizzes: one this Friday, which is a re-run from last Friday (with minor changes); and one the following Friday, which is brand new. All of the quizzes are at 4:00 p.m. EDT. Hope to see you there!
All - Thought you might like to know that when you come to the quiz on Friday, you'll be able to review your answers to the questions as long as you stay on the page. So you can write down any trouble spots you had (or even copy/paste some things if you like) and brush up on it later. See you then!

@Alex, FYI, I was counted off two points for transposing two words in 2 Corinthians 5:14-15. In official BB rules, it's only supposed to be 1 point off if you switch a word, unless I'm mistaken. Really great quiz though! Thanks!
Matthew - At least you know you'll get more points on the real thing :) I was aware of that, but the algorithm we're using makes that pretty tricky. So I'm leaving it the way it is.
@Alex - Okay. I can understand why it might be tricky to write a script for that. :)
@Ian - I'm not Alex, but my guess is yes. However, I'll let Alex answer you for certain. If you're not going to be available for a quiz then you can always request a rerun.

Really good quiz Alex, and I especially like being able to review my answers. There were three multiple questions that we all agreed did not have the right answer - 7, 13, and 14, I believe. I don't remember what they were but I just wanted to let you know.

One thing that would be nice though, is even after you close out of the quiz room, you could still come back later and review your answers.
Matthew - Oops, you're definitely right about #14.
I have reproduced the other two questions:
7. If we walk in the light...

Correct: d
Even though John did not verbatim say, "If we walk in the light, we still have sin" he does say that if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves. So that's how I got C (maybe it was misunderstood as we still are going to be condemned for our sin? didn't mean that); and I think A and B were pretty clear.
13. What will we be, according to 1 John 3:2?
A) Angels
B) Not entirely sure
C) We'll be like Him
D) B and C

So maybe I'm too creative, but this is 1 John 3:2 ESV: "Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is." In NIV it says something like what we will be has not yet been made known. So I took that to mean that we aren't entirely sure what we will be, but we do know we will be like Him.
I know for the actual Bible Bee, you have to be able to spot things that are definitely in the verse, but are not worded the same way. That's all I was trying to emulate. Maybe I went a bit too far. The Bible Bee's questions will definitely be better :)
Leah - Let me think about it. I might try to put together a separate, new quiz for next Friday, in which case I would probably re-run this one on a Wednesday.

Update: Record of about 54 quizzers! It was great to see everyone! I'm sure you'll all do great at Locals. And as we like to say every year, the contest can be a fun part of this, but it's not the only part or the main part. The main part is growing in our relationship with Christ. So I think we should do our best for God's glory and for the fun of competing, but without stressing out too much :)

Alex - I just wanted to say thanks again for the live quizzes this year! They were fun and encouraging! Also, thanks for the reminder to not focus to much on the contest but on growing in our relationship with Christ.
