Memorize "Elijah" with us

Time Posted on December 03, 2011 User Phil Walker

Each of the past 3 years, we have had a verse a day world-wide Scripture Memory initiative. It started with HEBREWS, then 1 TIMOTHY and last year's 1 JOHN.

Shortly after the 1 TIMOTHY project began, I got an email from Andy letting me know about this new Scripture Memory website he had made called Memverse. He thought it might be a good tool for people around the world memorizing 1 TIMOTHY to encourage and inspire each other as well as keep track of their individual verses.  I took a look at Memverse and loved it. I sent out an email to our 1 TIMOTHY participants letting them know about Memverse, and as they say, the rest is history... It was a lot of fun that first year to see almost half of the top 100 most popular verses all come from 1 TIMOTHY.  The chart has since been overtaken by a bunch of enthusiastic Bible Bee memorizers so that now zero verses from 1 TIMOTHY remain and only the famous 1:9 remains in 31st place from 1 JOHN.  There are currently no verses from 1 KINGS 17 - 2 KINGS 2 in the top 100.  Will you pray with me that we can get the word out enough about the Elijah project on memverse to change that.  (maybe some day Memverse will extend the chart out to the top 1,000 most popular verses so I could see where others beyond the top 100 currently rank.)

I am praying for 100 Elijah finishers and at least 10 Elijah project groups memorizing together offline.  Do you have some friends or a church group who might want to memorize Elijah with you for some exciting face-to-face discussion, meditation, encouragement, and inspiration the next few months?

One exciting new tool for memorizing Elijah is www.impresskids.com  I have 1 KINGS 17:1 and 1 KINGS 17:2-4 set up in the 1984 NIV, KJV, NKJ, ESV, NASB, the Magadang Balita Biblia (Tagalog spoken in the Philippines) and Terjemahan Baru (Indonesian).  I also have through 1 KINGS 17:16 in the 1984 NIV.  Let me know if you would like us to include Elijah verses in other translations as well.  You can join our Elijah page at http://www.impresskids.com/my/place/101

Any on Facebook can join our group there at http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=673866741&ref=tn_tnmn#!/groups/Memorize1John/

Schedule for memorizing 1 KINGS 17-19, 21; and 2 KINGS 1:1-2:18  (there is no legalism in this schedule.  You may start and end and go at whatever pace best suits you and your friends.)  This schedule is just a guideline and the pace that I and Jacky will be following.

1 KINGS 17:1-24 = Dec 12th - Jan 4th;      1 KINGS 18:1-46 = Jan 5th - Feb 19th;     1 KINGS 19:1-21 = Feb 20th - March 12th;

1 KINGS 21:1-29 = March 13th - April 10th;     2 KINGS 1:1-18 = April 11 - 28th;     2 KINGS 2:1-18 = April 29th - May 16th

then if you are ages 7-18 take a short break and get ready for the 2012 National Bible Bee  www.biblebee.org

Current known ELIJAH memorizers:  If you are no longer memorizing ELIJAH or are listed twice, please let me know.  Also let me know if you are aware of people memorizing with us who are not on this list.

Please pray for people in this group.  Pray that God might grant us strength, endurance, motivation and discipline to keep memorizing.  Pray even more importantly, that the Scripture might be powerful in our lives and that God may be pleased on our meditation on His Truth through this project.  Less importantly, but still worth praying about, you can also sneak in a short prayer that those on this list not on Memverse may discover the joy and benefit of Memverse and that Memverse may gain new strongholds of members through the Elijah Project.

I can honestly say that I am more excited about starting this new world wide Elijah initiative than with any of the 3 previous wonderful experiences we had.  Maybe a part of it is simply what is going on in my life.  I got married June 25th shortly after finishing 1 JOHN so this will be the first large Scripture memory project Jacky and I, Lord willing, complete together.  I can't wait to memorize, discuss, and pray over these powerful verses with her.  Any other husband/wife or boyfriend/girlfriend teams going to experience this joy with us?

Secondly, Jacky and I are engaged in radical full time ministry spreading a passion for Scripture in the Philippines and Indonesia and wherever else God sends us.  We want and desperately need Elijah's God to be real for us as He leads, empowers, and provides for our lives and our ministry.

Lastly, Jacky is pregnant with our first child.  As new parents, we don't want to share dead, weak, or hypocritical religious teaching and practices to our children who know us best.  Rather, we pray that God will so change and indwell us that our children will see us literally trusting the God of Elijah to be at work in our family.

I don't know what your situation is. However, I do know that our Christian world, and especially the next generation of Christians growing up needs to know that the true, living, Biblical God of Elijah is real, and is just as powerful, and wants to be wholeheartedly trusted just as much in 2011 as thousands of years ago during the days of Elijah.  Will all the advances and excitement of modern sience, psychology, technology, materialism, entertainment, and temporal worldly success reduce the Bible to irrelevant even if it's true?  Or will we fully live up to the life Jesus Christ died and rose again to bring and live inside of us.  Will those who see our faith in a powerful, living God join Elisha in passionately wanting to know the God who lives in us for themselves as they proclaim "Where now is the God of Elijah?"

I invite you to join us in memorizing "Elijah" the next few months. I ask you to help me in spreading the word by email, twitter, facebook, in your churches, etc. so that all who might want to memorize "Elijah" with us will hear of our support group. Lastly, I would ask you to consider and pray about possibly starting an offline "Memorize Elijah" group for face-to-face encouragement, inspiration and growth.

If you have any questions, insights, or ideas for me, or if you would like to receive weekly Elijah encouragement emails, feel free to get in touch through philjohn1558@yahoo.com in addition to this blog.

Currently there are 3 of us with Jacky, Josiah, and myself memorizing "Elijah" the next few months. Anyone else want to join us in this powerful, radical faith building adventure?

JAMES claims that Elijah was nobody extra special. Rather, JAMES wants us to believe that we can have the same faith Elijah had. Is JAMES exaggerating or mislead, or does anybody actually believe such a radical faith is possible in 2011?

Looking forward to beginning in nine days! To answer your question, I believe that the radical faith that Elijah has is still possible in 2011, and that we can look at stories of martyrs and missionaries, like the one who prayed that it would rain on a festival for the sun to show that the LORD GOD, and not the sun god, was in control, and see others who have faith like him.

On another note, congratulations that your wife is pregnant! I hadn't heard that before!

Phil, I would but I have a lot of things that I am currently working on right now including Romans and 1+2 Peter. But I probably will just at a lot slower pace than the rest of you. And I do think that it is possible to have the kind of faith of Elijah and even more since the Holy Spirit abides in us. But on the other hand I am very lacking in that area.

Congratulations Mr and Mrs Walker :D when is the due date, if I may ask?

I would really like to memorize this passage of scripture, but currently am working on 1 Peter. I would like to be added to the list, but may or may not follow the schedule.

Thanks :D

Thank you for organizing this, Mr. Walker! I plan to participate.

It should be interesting since none of the chapters I have ever memorized are narrative--the only complete chapters I know are from the Epistles.

Me too! I started today with 1 Kings 17:1-2, but I won't declare my verses, but if I can I will be done at the appointed time. (If not earlier!)

Would anyone consider memorizing the gospel of John with me? I'm already 25 verses into chapter 1, but I believe that the benefits of knowing an entire gospel, especially John would be very great. It is possible to be trying to memorize Romans, "Elijah" and John at the same time. I do this by writing the verses down on a paper the night before the day I plan to memorize them. This really helps me.

@ALL: If I am correct, Mr. Walker was referring to James 5:17:

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth.
I believe that Elijah had more faith than most, if not all people today, but if he had a nature like ours, then what is to keep us from having the same faith? This faith might not accomplish that same things, but if we have enough faith, God will put it to use in some way. It takes faith to believe this: faith to believe what God says over our own doubts. I think this faith is possible in 2011, 2012, 2013, etc!

I am ready for a new challenge right now! Count me in. Blessings on your new little one. Be sure to recite your verses to your baby in the womb. They hear and learn to recognize your voice. Wouldn't be neat for your child to be the next Elijah! Start building their faith in the womb and see what Yah will do.

Connie, Rachel, Ben, Elisa, InSoloChristo, and Marisa, great to have you guys joining us. Can any of you find a friend or two to form a local group that will be memorizing Elijah together offline?

I sent out a mass email inviting people to join us. If anyone wants a copy of that email to forward to others, let me know by email to philjohn1558@yahoo.com

Jacky and I will be praying for each of you as we all prepare to take in, meditate on, and Lord willing, get the most out of memorizing Elijah.

Feel free to share anytime you have insights, questions, or ideas.

Can anybody think of creative ways we can get the word out to others who might want to join us?

PS Jacky is due July 4th. She has some complications so we would appreciate your prayers. Marisa, thanks for your encouragement and blessing for Junior. We do already share a verse of the day with him/her and are praying for God's richest blessing and His will to be done in this new life.

Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Walker! My family is praying that the complications will go away (For lack of a better phrase)

I'm up for it! Let's do this thing! Although I probably won't always be exactly up to date.

I know a couple that may want to do this together. I'll try to get them involved. (However, they are also memorizing Romans together.)

EDIT-- They would prefer to simply stick with Romans.

@Mr. Walker: CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR LITTLE ONE!!! May God ordain praise from the lips of this infant, to still His adversaries! (Psalm 8:2)

I think I will join this project, although with my other memory verses I will probably not totally follow the schedule. I have made myself a list of verses to memorize for the winter, and that will keep me pretty busy until March, so maybe I'll start then.

I'll try... emphasis on "try," but trying nonetheless. I haven't done so well with Romans (as far as staying on track and being consistent), but I know if I really wanted to I could do it.

Ignore what I said in the previous blog conversation about this. I am happy to say I will be memorizing Elijah with Memverse!

Not only that, but I talked to my dad and my family will be studying Elijah during our evening devotions. But I may be the only member of my family who actually memorizes it.

Also, I have a friend who competed at Nationals with me. We've decided to memorize Elijah together off-line, meeting once a week to review. So we memorized 1 Kings 17:1-6 yesterday, and hopefully we'll have the whole of chapter 17memorized by next week. (We're trying to memorize fast so we can start Romans.)

Thanks so much for starting this, Mr. Walker. I can't wait to see what God will do through this!

There are a couple things that I would like to say. 1. Congratulations to Matthew, Erika and Phil for taking the second spot on the church leaderboard with the Elijah Project. Is anybody up to the task of passing them ? And I will be praying for all that undertake this project although it is too much for me to do right now. Remember God can increase your faith to a faith that is even more than the prophet Elijah. He was after all a man but a very Godly man. Also another good thing that you can take from this is he was outnumbered and probably considered a false prophet. Are we willing to stand up for God the way Elijah stood up for Him ? And what are other gods that are competing in your life ? root them out get rid of them. Again praying for all of you.

What a great encouragement, God's Bondslave! But I must say something in regards to your previous comment about Elijah not having the Holy Spirit. He did have the Holy Spirit! Maybe even in greater measure than we do, because God spoke to him directly (he was a prophet). All the Old Testament saints had the Holy Spirit, by the way - because there is no other way to believe unless the Holy Spirit guides our hearts!
Just wanted to make that clear.
Again, thanks for the encouragement!

Rachel, it is 1 verse per day starting Dec 12th and going into May (unless you are Laura and her friends who may be done with everything by the time the rest of us start ch 18.) As always, the pace is not legalistic. We will support everyone at whatever pace they go.

Great to hear of the offline Elijah groups starting. I pray that others will prayerfully consider joining them. I am praying for 10 offline groups (I will lead at least 2 and possibly 3 or more if we get to Indonesia soon. Where are the others?)

PS I am in Beijing, China!!!!!!! ... Actually I am just in the airport for 2 hours about to board my flight to Manila to return to Jacky. However, I pray that someday, Lord willing, God will open the door for Jacky and I (and possibly others) to build on what Hudson Taylor started and impact this giant, influential, beautiful country with a passion for Scripture and a knowledge of and love for the true Biblical God through a new life in Jesus Christ!

Surreyhorse, I am curious who you have included in your "us". Do you have family or friends memorizing with you?

Kaitlyn and Laura, great to see you guys already declaring for the chart, not only ahead of schedule, but even a few days before the rest of us even get started. Laura, if your friend doesn't mind we would like to include him/her on the declaration chart.

I will soon be listing all the Memverse participants in "Elijah" and give some totals for how many are joining off memverse. I hope to now send out my Facebook invitations. Please pray that many will join from these. (I tend to get hundreds of initial "yes" clicks without much evidence of people following through.)

I would also like to list all off-line groups of 2 or more meeting or calling each other on a regular basis for mutual encouragement, inspiration and accountability. Can you let me know if you are in such a group?

All of you are in Jacky and my prayers as we get excited about memorizing together and lifting up others we know are also memorizing Elijah.

Mr. Walker,
If you want to put us on the chart, that's great with me. My friend's name is Mary L. and she is a fellow Nebraskan. When we meet tomorrow I'll find out how far she got, hopefully through chapter 1.

I'm excited about how the Elijah project is taking off! God bless everyone who's starting to memorize tomorrow.

@God's Bondslave: Bright Lights is a young ladies discipleship's groups. BRIGHT stands for "Being Radiant in Godliness, Holiness, and Testimony." There are groups across the USA and the members get together every so often, and have a Bible study or something like that. They have conferences with alot of the groups. Here is the link to the site. http://brothersandsisters.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=46&Itemid=54 I'd love to do it, but haven't found a Bright Lights Group near me :( hope this helps you understand :D

Okay, I'll guess I'll declare the verses - 1 Kings 17:1-6 (Actually 1 Kings 17:1-10)

You can put in Caleb W on the chart: Caleb W OH A

I think I'll do 2 or 3 verses a day - that way I can get it done faster! I might even have to declare B later today!

I've decided to follow the chart! I was so excited this morning when I woke up, that as soon as I got out of bed and got a drink, I memorized 1 Kings 17:1 !!!! I felt like memorizing more, But I think I will stick to the chart :) I will be doing one verse of 1 peter too, so I think I'll be busy :D

1 Kings 17:1

And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab: As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

Is that correct? :D

Have a great day ;)

@Rachel- Yes, my name is Rosie.

Well, we sing hymns, make a craft, have a snack and go over the next lesson. And sometimes, when holidays come around, such as Christmas, we might go caroling or something. This year, for Christmas, we are going to a nursing home to give out cookies, sing Christmas carols and just bring Christmas cheer to the nursing home residents.

We meet every other Thursday. In fact, I'm going to my Bright Lights group this Thurday to go to the nursing home. I hope this was helpful and that you might be able to find a group closer to you.

Caleb, good to get your first declarations. You are moving ahead faster than the group which is fine.

Rachel, your quote looks good. I use the 1984 NIV, so I am not positive every word is perfect.

Claire, I wanted to go Old Testament after 3 NT books. I have always loved Elijah and I and Jacky fell a little like Elijah in being dependant on God here in full time ministry in the Philippines and Indonesia. We are praying that God will give us Elijah's faith!

Hi @Phil, Yes, we do like to memorize as a family. We have been inspired both by your website and by the National Bible Bee. Last year was our first year for both. Before it was more like a verse per week, which seems wimpy now ;-) My husband and I memorized the Primary Timothy track last year and were really blessed. We have 3 BB Jrs who also enjoy the challenge of digging deeper. Thanks for the encouragement that is evident in your every post. God bless you and your growing family!

@InSoloChristo, You make an excellent point! It is so easy to be impressed by Elijah, but the widow and her son must have been heroes of faith as well! Could I feed a stranger before feeding my only son? I hope I'm never asked to do that-- I would probably fail that test....

Surreyhorse, I am thrilled that you and your family are enjoying Memverse and the Bible Bee. I too am a huge fan of both. I am curious how you first heard of each of them.

To clarify, I am not the owner of Memverse. Andy Vitus is both the founder and"owner" of Memverse. Alex Watt is his right hand man with technical computer stuff, Emeka is our talented graphic designer and the rest of us volunteer as we can to spread the word about Memverse, contribute blog comments, answer feedback questions, memorize, meditate on, obey, and love Scripture, etc.

The way Andy set it up and runs it, in a way all of us like to think of Memverse as owned by God and for His glory with each of us having part ownership in it as servants of our King and lovers/spreaders of His Word.

I first got hooked on Memverse when I saw how much it could encourage, inspire, and support our group memorizing 1 TIMOTHY. I am very much looking forward to it helping us with Elijah.

InSoloChristo, you make a great point about the widow and her son. I think sometimes it is easier to trust and obey God in poverty and desperation than it is in times of abundance and wealth. Common sense says it should be the other way around. If we have plenty, and especially if we see our plenty as a gift from our loving God, we should, in turn, lovingly be able to easily afford helping others as the Bible repeatedly and passionately commands us to do. (Although sadly much of popular modern "Christian" teaching forbids us from doing so until we have fully secured our and our children's future needs for years to come including a comfortable, stress-free, no need to trust God, "Christian" pre-retirement.)

Laura, Caleb, Kaitlyn and any others who may jump in and move in front of the group pace. We welcome and encourage you in finishing early and welcome you to post your declarations as you go. However, with the chart, I will only post one letter at a time for those close to the lead and I will likely keep the leaders at least somewhat close to the group pace.

Caleb, please list the verses as you post declarations.

@Claire--The Elijah Project is now off the Church Leaderboard because of the recently inputted "Group Leaderboard," which is comprised of those groups which are not really considered as churches, but which some people would like to join anyway, such as the Elijah Project or the Bible Bee.

I'm also assuming that the Vredevoogd family has joined another group for the moment and may be coming back when the BB restarts next year (this is only an assumption, of course). :)

On the topic of faith we should, in addition to Elijah, the widow and her son, remember Obadiah. To hide 100 people who were wanted dead, and to be head of the household - of the one who wanted them dead, is quite a heroic act of faith in God.

@AstroLeah & God's Maiden of Virtue: You certainly don't have to join the Elijah Project to do it - and we don't really need you anyway - but we certainly wouldn't mind you.

@All: I'm just curious to know what translation you use. I use ___. Hey, along those lines, I think there should be a translation leaderboard!

Yes, I think a translation board could be interesting I use the KJV but I think there are probably too many people out there with the NIV. Just sayin, :) But on the other hand there are a lot of good memorizers out there that use the good old KJV.

My vote would be that a translation leaderboard for Memverse could likely be devisive. However, I believe translation groups are fine. In fact, anyone could start an "Elijah Project KJV" group. One thing we did with 1 TIMOTHY was have conference calls where everyone with the same translation could call in and encourage each other and quote together.

Personally I am fine with it. Those in it may want to change the name to "King James Version" and take off the only if they feel it offends people. However, I am not offended.

Maybe in the future, if a group hypothetically has discussions that are acceptable and encouraging to people in the group, but potentially offending to those outside the group, Memverse might be able to fix it where certain group's discussions don't show up on the "recent comments" page.

Everyone,

First, please respect the original blog posts and try to confine your comments to the original topic otherwise threads become unnecessarily long.

Second, at this time we aren't going to have a leader board based on translations. The primary purpose of the leader boards is to provide encouragement and some exceptionally light-hearted competition to spur one another on.

When I originally started Memverse I was under the impression that 100 verses was more than anyone would ever memorize. I was surprised as I had to continually move the upper limit on the number of memory verses higher until eventually it was removed altogether.

I added the 'Groups' leader board somewhat against my better judgment because it was requested so often. My hope is that it will encourage those who might not currently belong to a church, those who join intermittent memorization projects, and those who feel a close affiliation to a second group. I also hope that it will allow for the formation of smaller groups for those who belong to large churches.

Let's not start a long discussion on the various merits of all the different translations. Remember there is only one body with Christ at the head. In ten days we will celebrate his birth. Read Luke 2 in all the translations you can lay your hands on.

@All: I'm sorry. I regret ever bringing that up. My intent was that you could tell me what translation you used when you declared your verses, but I never said it - so I can take the blame for the idea. I also never really thought much about the other perspectives on the 'Translation Leaderboard'. (I also found one other reason: it would hardly fit on the toolbar!) I do think I might be a little to competitive, (the reason I'm trying to fly through "Elijah") but I sincerely hope this doesn't affect my comments - if it does, just tell me, and I'll try to change it. Sorry again.

Here I stand, I can do no other: On Christ Alone! (The meaning of In Solo Christo.)

Claire, great to read about your family's desire to act out Elijah. Our church did this about 12 years ago. If you have an about 6 foot guy playing Elijah, I would be glad to send you the "animal skin" and wig I used, which I've also used for John the Baptist.

When I get my next chance, "Elijah - Mighty Prophet of God" is the next major drama I want to write and direct. I pray that this experience of memorizing Elijah will help me in that process. I praise God for the 10 people from Fountain of Life Christian Community Church who have signed on to memorize Elijah. We are expecting several more (mostly youth and Sunday School age) to join them. Please pray for those yet to join and for the church as a whole that God would bless their faithfulness to, and passion for His Word, and would protect them from, and in any Satanic attacks and other challenges that will likely come their way during this challenge.

Is there another church or other group out there that would consider also memorizing Elijah together as a community of Scripture loving believers? .

I'm memorizing 1 Kings 18:25-28 today - I have a question that some of you may be able to answer biblically: Was it wrong for Elijah to mock the prophets to Baal?

I also just discovered the mission statement of Memverse. I really like it - especially the apostle's creed!

@InSoloChristo--

Good question. I won't attempt an answer in this comment; just wanted to point out a verse that came to mind when I read your question.

In Proverbs 1 we see the personification of wisdom standing in the street. She is calling out for people to come and receive wisdom from her. Many are foolish and will not come and to those she says: "I will also laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your dread comes." (vs 26)

This may or may not be relative to the question, but it just came to mind =)

SavedByGrace

That's a hard question to answer... Mocking usually isn't shown as a good thing in the Bible, if ever, but it doesn't seem to me that Elijah was really doing anything wrong here. I'll have to think about that...

1575c466bffd5e7fd60d18c3b4c12bed?d=wavatar
Phil Walker

InSoloChristo, you are way ahead of us, but I will throw my thoughts in anyway. I would say that possibly Elijah was ok with mocking as the false gods and their prophets deserve to be mocked and God often had His true prophets mock or declare mocking against the false prophets and false gods.

However, possibly Elijah got carried away and a little too proud and sure of himself during the mocking, which could have contributed to his quick collapse in faith just a few hours later.

@amy: I didn't think of that text, but now that you mention it, it dawned on me that maybe because Elijah was a prophet God had told him to mock them, as Mr. Walker points out. 'Wisdom' in Proverbs 1 really personifies wisdom, or in other words, Christ! So if Christ mocks them, then the Holy Spirit may have told Elijah to mock the prophets and Baal.

I'm not ready to declare another letter, but I've been thinking about Elijah mocking the prophets of Baal. I was thinking last night about 1 Kings 18:36:

And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, "O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.
Notice: I have done all these things at your word. This may or may not include the mocking.
I also skimmed Matthew Henry's and John Gill's commentary on the text - they provide so helpful ideas.

OCTSRIS, you are not behind at all, but right on schedule. For the accountability chart, we ask that everyone keeps with the first name, first initial of the last name and the state or country. If you are concerned about safety or privacy, any of these may be fake (as long as you are not intentionally taking someone else's identity.) however we encourage people that are willing to use their real information.

Welcome to the group, Todd!

Great job, everyone. Bethany, we welcome you and any late-comers. Actually we will be sending out another encouragement for people to join on Jan 1st.

I just wanted to say that three local churches within our denomination are participating in the third annual Bible Bee of our own. We call it the "Triple Tree Bible Bee" after the name of our church, which is on a Triple Tree Road. The study standards are much lower (the highest age group has 60 verses to memorize), but it is still a very fun activity! Courtney and I are not participating as contestants, and so we are volunteering to help with the choosing of the memory verses, etc. Along with the book of Mark, the contestants will be studying the story of Elijah this year! I came up with the idea, but got it from this project.

Matthew, very neat to hear about your local Bible Bee (now in its 3rd year)!!!! 60 verses is less than the Bible Bee but still quite a bit more than 90% of professing Christians in the USA. Please keep us posted on how it goes. Maybe some from the Bee will want to build on their introduction to Elijah and memorize the whole story with us.

Has anybody else thought of running a local Bible Bee in your church or maybe as a church outreach in your town? Please let me know if you will try this or know of others doing it. It would be great to hear of these springing up all over the USA and around the world.

This past month, I twice almost committed to organizing and running a regional Bible Bee here in Northern Manila before we go to Indonesia. I fought off the urge both times, but there is still an outside chance I may try to run a little local one here before we leave. Please pray for wisdom and clear leading from God for me with this, as I am not used to making these decisions as a married man with a pregnant wife.

Either way, we will, Lord willing, soon be running and encouraging others to run many "Our God has Spoken" Bible Bees throughout Indonesia and the Philippines, in the hopes of, Lord willing, building towards a national Bible Bee in both countries as well as other Scripture initiatives and encouragements.

Hannah, very neat to see you join us in Spanish (to join our English and Tagalog memorizers) PS Are you the Hannah who taught Spanish in NY and now are on your way to Africa, or another Hannah who loves Spanish?

I recently heard from Michelle who invited her pastor to memorize Elijah with her and now 4 from the pastor's family are all memorizing with Michelle. Has everyone else invited their pastor to memorize Elijah with them, or encouraged your pastor to announce it in church?

@Bethany Pentimone: No, right now I'm memorizing 6 in Elijah, 1 in Romans, and 1 from a chapter of the New Testament. And I just prefer Firefox.

@God's Maiden of Virtue: Have you picked out a book from SMF? When I memorized 200 verses I ordered the biography of Isaac Watts.

@InSoloChristo-- I know I won't pass you anytime soon. I haven't memorized many verses this week, and I don't think that I will for a while. (That's just my guess, I'm not positive about it.) And no, I have not picked out a book from SMF. What is SMF anyway?

@God's Maiden of Virtue: If you go to this post you can learn about Scripture Memory Fellowship. I checked dates and, actually, your account didn't exist when that post was published. Pick a book from the list for 200 verses, and then e-mail SMF at smfi.77@gmail.com telling them your name, age, username, the book you want, and your home address.
Mr. Walker is trying to keep most of the declarations near the group pace. I'm declaring U, and H is what's on the post.
Hmm, you might not pass me then. I'm about to really start memorizing verses, because it's almost a month since I began memorizing 8 verses a day.

My goal for 2012 is to memorize Hebrews, Revelation, and re-learn Romans using the Word of Life technique. It will require memorizing 25 verses a week (a 2- to 3-hour commitment daily). If I can make this become part of my lifestyle, I can memorize all of the New Testament in 7 years! This challenge is the equivalent to the expectations for Primary level participants in the Bible Bee (250 verses in 3 months). For someone over 50 it is a bit more challenging. PLEASE PRAY for me to be able to persevere daily and to grow in my relationship with the Lord; that His Word, as well as the trials and temptation to give up will strengthen my faith in Him.

Welcome to the Romans Project, @InSoloChristo! How 'bout you consider this deal: when I pass you, I will do so with sweetness and kindness (and puppy dogs and rainbows, too!)?? Will that keep you in the Romans Project? Or could the greater truth lie in the possibility that learning Romans is too daunting a challenge for you? Is its narrow path of difficulty too scary? Could it be that learning one verse a chapter in the NT, many of which you already know, is the broad path of easiness for you in 2012? It's time for some soul-searching, my comrade: Romans Road? or Easy Street? You decide.

@Wretched Man: Bye! Off to the New Testament One Year Challenge! Just kidding. I don't need any rainbows or puppy dogs, thank you very much. Like I said, I am only joining the Romans Project for the sake of others - not you. Romans is not a daunting challenge at all for me, but you? I have long felt like Elihu because of you. But do not be discouraged - I can say with Elihu, "Behold, no fear of me need terrify you; my pressure will not be heavy upon you." Like your brilliant son says, I am ahead of you. What say you now, O Wretched Man? What now of your taunting? Dear friend, I suggest you return to the Romans Road yourself. Remember where Easy Street leads, friend, for your own safety! 17 verses may seem enough for a day - but could these be, (as they are), verses you have known for a long time? How long will you go limping between two different goals? If I am your goal, follow me, but if sincere memorization, follow it. It is enough. Your answers have been unkind and harsh, mine simple. I will answer you no longer. Do as you wish, so be it. Keep it up, but I will not answer.

@ChiefOfSinners: Thanks - but, remember, you are equal to Eliphaz.

First, let me say that I wish, too, that I could join the Elijah Project right now, but the Romans Project is consuming the bulk of my efforts. I have enjoyed reading members' comments on the ancient debate about whether Elijah's mockery of the priests of Baal was a righteous act or if it was wrong. I appreciate those who have used Scripture to support other passages of Scripture, including "Wisdom" in Proverbs mocking and laughing at the "simple ones" who reject "her." It is a fine line to walk, especially with so many atheists and false prophets so famously promoting themselves today. They are easy fodder for scorn and mockery, except that we were they, but by the grace of God.

I would toss in the suggestion that after the Elijah Project, maybe an Elisha Project would also be a good pursuit in the future, as the stories recounting his work are priceless for sharing with young children.

Secondly, I have moved all of my remaining "off-topic" comments to the blog post link provided by Mr. DeGraaf. Please go there to be amused, provoked, challenged, and toyed with.

Do you have any idea why ChiefOfSmileys (or ChiefOfDeserters) left Heritage Reformed Baptist Church?

What?! No, I don't know why ChiefOfSinners left. I'm suprised he did. I wonder why...

InSoloChristo- Yeah. I just saw why it happened when I looked at his comment on God-honoring Scripture Memory and Friendship Chat. At least we're back up at #3 again.

Laura Hedstrom and Mary L- Congratulations on finishing the "Elijah" Project! I'm happy to hear that you are now starting Romans. It is going to take a lot of perseverance.

@Rosie: The strange thing is that even after he came back we were still #7 for a while.
Anyway, it doesn't matter, and I'm going to stop because it is off topic.

CheifOfSinners had some weird problem with his profile. He didn't really leave the church.

Maybe someone was monkeying around on the internet and cause a virus?

Hi folks! Good to see you all here, working away at this project. I am usually an offline participant, but for the next two months, my girls and I are in Kansas City doing an internship at IHOP-KC, so we have high speed internet (most days). So I've been using memverse to help me memorize and review old memory verses. It's great!
With the Elijah project though, I see that NKJV is not available for chapter 18. Should I just add it myself? Thanks Phil for all your help and support!

Sheena, good to hear that you will have the time and internet access to focus on Elijah and other Scripture while in KC. I have been enjoying reading your email updates and Jacky and I are praying for you and your girls as you prepare with IHOP and memorize Elijah.

Yes, it would be great if you could add chapter 18 in the NKJ. Do you have software or will you copy and paste from www.biblegateway.com ?

Can someone please tell me if there withh be anything like or close to the timothy track in this years bible bee? Because our family might be taking a trip in sept. and if we are and If i qualify for nationals it won't be easy to memorize 15+ verses plus study the book we're suppose too.

No Timothy Track this year, Rachel. Sorry. :) There definitely won't be any Timothy Track for National Qualifiers! If you're taking the car, then you could use your time in the car to memorize/study.

Thanks Matthew. I am a bit concerned though about memorizing in the car.Click here for more graphics and gifs! :) It can get VERY noisy in our van (with I having 4 brothers and a very active 4 year old sister) and I find it hard to memorize in those conditions :) Click here for more graphics and gifs!

Any tips on memorizing in the car?

840e71b809211355c25abad9a708c19f?d=wavatar
not telling. :P

Rachel, I have the same problem. My family will probably be taking a trip in September also, and I have found that the car is one of the most difficult places I know of to memorize, recite, or inductively study the bible. I have 7 brothers and 1 very loud baby sister, and as you mentioned, that makes things a bit chaotic at times.:) Unfortunately, I haven't found any cure for it yet either, so I guess we'll just have to study really hard before and after the trips to make up for it. *slightly intimidated smile*

2 Corinthians 5:17

Where are you all going Seth? That is what I was thinking...study really hard before and after. What will you be this year? It will be my first year as a Senior (gulp) that will make it even harder to study with more verses :/

I sometimes record my memory verses and put them on an mp3 player. I don't know if it would work in a noisy car, but you could give it a try... :)

With all my pestering other people about posting off-topic comments, I'm doing it myself! Sorry about that.

Sorry for my delays in posting the new declarations. Thanks for keeping active. Please pray for me as I hope, Lord willing, to present 2 dramatic presentations at my seminary STT Setia in Indonesia. In the first, I will quote the whole text with a translator following me phrase by phrase.

In the 2nd, I will be the narator and Elijah in English with one translator for the narator and a different one for Elijah. All the other people will be played by students and teachers in the school in Indonesian.

Please pray that I can fully memorize the text and be prepared to present it dramatically. I have been reading it a lot, but as you can see from the chart am behind in memorizing.

Pray that all the other actors will be able to do well and enjoy it. Pray that this could inspire a lot of Scripture memory and passion for the Bible at the seminary and pray that God will get all the glory.

Well, I'm FINALLY back on here. I've been taking a break from Elijah for awhile; I had too many things going at once. But I do intend to finish this project! I put off all memorizations projects to do the Bible Bee (it was my 1st year and I LOVED it!), and now I have another group project. But when that is finished I will try to do this and Romans at the same time; I think I can manage that. The only time I will NEVER do 2 projects at once is when I'm participating in the Bible Bee.

I hope to start over soon!
