Walk through the Old Testament

Time Posted on December 31, 2012 User Phil Walker Comment 37 comments

Several years ago, I had picked a key verse for every chapter of the New Testament.  This year, I am picking a key verse for every chapter of the Old Testament.  GENESIS is done as you can see below.  I would love ideas for what you think should be key verses for any of the chapters in the other books.

For those who want to memorize these key verses, we are starting an accountability chart.  Every 10 verses equals 1 letter.  Since there are more than 260 chapters in the OT, we will have a creative variation on the accountability chart for those who make it through Z the first time.  To declare, give your first name, the first initial of your last name, the state or country you are from, and either the 10 references of the verses you memorized or a description.

I will be writing out a devotional for each of these key verses.  These will be listed on the Memverse Forum.  Anyone who would like to receive the daily verse with the devotional can request it by email to philjohn1558@yahoo.com

Which of the Genesis verses below have you found to be worth memorizing?  Which do you already know?

We would love to list all participants as an encouragement and inspiration to others.  We would also love to list all groups memorizing together.

2013 HAKOTS participants:  = Angela M; Anita; Connie McLean; Daniel; Idaman; Jacky Walker; Karen F; Lee C;  Lewi; Matthew Glick; Phil Walker; PrayerWarrior13; SavedByGrace = 13 people

Groups memorizing together:  Walkers (Phil, Jacky, Junior), Idaman, Daniel, and Lewi memorizing in the 1984 NIV at the STT Setia campus in West Jakarta, Indonesia

Accountability Chart: Those who wish can join our chart where we will list the first name, first initial of the last name, state (or country), and progress.  The first 260 verses convenently breaks down into 26 groups of 10 verses each to be declared.  Verses don't have to declared in order.  A sample declaration would be Zach J  NY  Genesis 1-10. On the chart, we will not go faster than a one verse per day pace.  However, you can declare whenever you want.

I recommend memorizing this list of verses for Bible Bee enthusiasts, SavedbyGrace's "entire Bible" group, and any others who want a good overall grasp of the Old Testament.  Others may simply want a collection of 929 powerful treasures.  Please let us know if you are joining, if you have family or friends memorizing with you, and if you have any tips or ideas to encourage or support others in the group.  I will be using the Memverse Forum to post my daily email devotionals I send out based on these verses. I look forward to any feedback, insights, or thoughts you have as we interact with the daily Scripture and each other’s thoughts.

GENESIS 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
GENESIS 2:17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die
GENESIS 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.
GENESIS 4:7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.
GENESIS 5:24 Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.
GENESIS 6:9 This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.
GENESIS 7:23 Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; men and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds of the air were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark.
GENESIS 8:22 As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.
GENESIS 9:16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.
GENESIS 10:9 He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; that is why it is said, "Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD."
GENESIS 11:4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."
GENESIS 12:4 So Abram left, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran.
GENESIS 13:17 "Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you."
GENESIS 14:18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High,
GENESIS 15:5 He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars - if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."
GENESIS 16:13 She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen the One who sees me."
GENESIS 17:7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.
GENESIS 18:14 "Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son."
GENESIS 19:26 But Lot's wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
GENESIS 20:11 Abraham replied, "I said to myself, 'There is surely no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.'
GENESIS 21:1 Now the LORD was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what he had promised.
GENESIS 22:14 So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided."
GENESIS 23:4 "I am an alien and a stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead."
GENESIS 24:56 But he said to them, "Do not detain me, now that the LORD has granted success to my journey. Send me on my way so I may go to my master."
GENESIS 25:23 The LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger."
GENESIS 26:22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth, saying, "Now the LORD has given us room and we will flourish in the land."
GENESIS 27:36 Esau said, "Isn't he rightly named Jacob ? He has deceived me these two times: He took my birthright, and now he's taken my blessing!" Then he asked, "Haven't you reserved any blessing for me?"
GENESIS 28:16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it."
GENESIS 29:20 So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.
GENESIS 30:22 Then God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and opened her womb.
GENESIS 31:24 Then God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night and said to him, "Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad."
GENESIS 32:28 Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome."
GENESIS 33:10 "No, please!" said Jacob. "If I have found favor in your eyes, accept this gift from me. For to see your face is like seeing the face of God, now that you have received me favorably.
GENESIS 34:9 Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.
GENESIS 35:3 "Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone."
GENESIS 36:9 This is the account of Esau the father of the Edomites in the hill country of Seir.
GENESIS 37:28 So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.
GENESIS 38:1 At that time, Judah left his brothers and went down to stay with a man of Adullam named Hirah.
GENESIS 39:2 The LORD was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.
GENESIS 40:23 The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.
GENESIS 41:16 "I cannot do it," Joseph replied to Pharaoh, "but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires."
GENESIS 42:1 When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, "Why do you just keep looking at each other?"
GENESIS 43:14 "And may God Almighty grant you mercy before the man so that he will let your other brother and Benjamin come back with you. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved."
GENESIS 44:32 "Your servant guaranteed the boy's safety to my father. I said, 'If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my father, all my life!"
GENESIS 45:7 But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.
GENESIS 46:4 "I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again. And Joseph's own hand will close your eyes."
GENESIS 47:31 "Swear to me," he said. Then Joseph swore to him, and Israel worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.
GENESIS 48:20 He blessed them that day and said, "In your name will Israel pronounce this blessing: 'May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.' " So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.
GENESIS 49:24 But his bow remained steady, his strong arms stayed limber, because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,

GENESIS 50:20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.

The Bible, the Bee, and the Family

Time Posted on April 05, 2012 User Alex Watt Comment 37 comments

If Christ holds the universe together by the Word of his power, why would we think it takes anything less to hold a family together? And even if Christian families know that only God's grace can make them effective as an embassy for Christ, are Christian families in the Word together and in prayer together to make their embassy vision a practical reality?

Learning to live as ambassadors of Christ is a life-long pursuit. As long as we're on earth, our mission is to "make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19). Discipleship doesn't end with the family, but it does start there. Parents, particularly fathers, are instructed to bring their children up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4).

No matter where you are in life, I hope that you see the significance of the Christian family and the importance of helping families — not only our own, but also others — grow in the grace of God through the Word of God.

As I think about parents discipling their children, I think about the 2012 National Bible Bee. My favorite feature of this year's program is that there will "only" be two verse cards per week and approximately twenty minutes of planned Bible study per day. There are less verses over the summer than in years past. But I think the principle of "less is more" may prove true here: With less verses to memorize, there is more time to meditate. More families — really all families — can have a structured time for family discipleship through the Bible Bee, memorizing Scripture, praying together, and studying the Bible.

I encourage you to watch the video below and then pray about how you can encourage family discipleship in your family and your local church. I see several big opportunities:

  1. Parents using the Bible Bee as a tool to disciple their children. You can learn more about that on the Bible Bee's homepage — they have a nice overview of the program this year.
  2. Local churches and other ministries hosting a Bible Bee. More hosts are needed to enable more families to participate. To learn about what hosting entails, you can click here.
  3. Volunteers helping to host a local Bee.
  4. Prayer supporters: "Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain." (Psalm 127:1, ESV)
  5. Donors who believe that investing financially in the Bible Bee is a wise use of God's resources.

Again, the Bible Bee has a great website which you can visit to register now or learn more: www.BibleBee.org.

Memory Verses - Various Projects

Time Posted on February 18, 2012 User Phil Walker Comment 285 comments

I can still remember when God first used Galatians 2:20 to open my eyes to my sinfulness and need of an authentic transforming saving faith and new Life in Jesus Christ.  Immediately God also gave me a conviction that the Bible truly was His Word for us and worth devoting ourselves to in our pursuit of knowing, pleasing, loving, serving, worshipping, trusting, and obeying Him.  I couldn't wait to connect with other Christians whose eyes had also been supernaturally opened and who shared my passion for the Scripture.

Rather than running into many other mature Christians who had already been passionately diving into Scripture who could inspire and guide me, it almost seemed like NO ONE else was interested in knowing the Bible more than they already did, or much less, even considering memorizing or deeply diving into Scripture.  Where was Memverse back in 1990 when I needed some encouragement and wanted to know I was not the only one in the world who thought the Bible was worth memorizing?

I absolutely love how we on Memverse can get instant encouragement, support, inspiration and often practical tips to help us with whatever we are memorizing or want to memorize.  Currently there are people on Memverse memorizing ROMANS, 1 PETER, 2 PETER, "Elijah", and the One Year New Testament Challenge of one key verse from every chapter in the NT.

There is also a growing group who has committed to trying to memorize the entire Bible in their lifetime.

This blog is devoted to those who have other Scripture memory projects going on, are considering Scripture memory projects or goals they want encouragement for, or would like more information about other Scripture memory groups available.

Please do not use Memverse or this blog as a substitute for the joy and reward of finding or praying for face to face Scripture memory partners.  Why not pray for the best of both!!  To have a face to face group memorizing and discussing with you while inspiring, encouraging and being encouraged and inspired by other individuals and maybe even other face to face groups around the world who are memorizing the same Scripture you are.

With our  "Our God has Spoken" Scripture ministries representative Angie Metran and Fountain of Life both promoting Scripture memory big in the Philippines; I and my wife Jacky now promoting a passion for Scripture in Indonesia; and our good friend Hannah Garcia promoting a love for Scripture (though not yet on Memverse) in Zambia, I am more excited than ever in seeing God get all the glory and His Word being honored around the world.  Will anyone pray with me that one day we will have passionate, Scripture loving partners in every country of the world?

I heard a rumor that a Memverse member is considering memorizing PSALMS.  What are you memorizing, or wanting to memorize?

Elijah Project Audio

Time Posted on January 04, 2012 User Alex Watt Comment 13 comments

To aid participants with their memory verses in the Elijah Project, we are posting MP3 audio files for the passages you are memorizing (1 Kings 17-19, 21; and 2 Kings 1:1-2:18). Currently, you can choose from four translations: the King James Version, the New International Version (1984), the English Standard Version, and the New King James Version. The files came from Faith Comes By Hearing and JCSM.org (no known copyright except for the Bible publishers), and we just edited the files to be one file for each translation. We listened to each of these and they seem error-free. (We removed a one-word error from the NIV; please note in the comments if you find any other errors.)

King James Version Download Here 14.5 MB
New International Version (1984 edition) Download Here 10.3 MB
English Standard Version Download Here 14.2 MB
New King James Version Download Here 12.3 MB

Thanks to Phil Walker for all the work he has been doing on the Elijah Project, and thanks to Ben for helping me compile the audio files.

The diligent Elijah memorizers are inspiring. Keep it up!

Memorize with a Church and a Group

Time Posted on December 13, 2011 User Andy Comment 97 comments

Since many Memverse users have been torn over whether to belong to their church or a 'group' we have added the ability to join both. On the profile page you can now select both a church and a group to belong to.

If you have been using the Church/Organization field to affiliate yourself with a group, please move that over to the 'Group' option. Over time, we will remove inactive groups from the Church Leaderboard. And, as you can imagine, there is a brand new Group Leaderboardcheeky

B.R.I.G.H.T. LIGHTS on Memverse

Time Posted on December 12, 2011 User Phil Walker Comment 60 comments

Bright Lights is a young ladies discipleship's groups. BRIGHT stands for "Being Radiant in Godliness, Holiness, and Testimony." There are groups across the USA and the members get together every so often, and have a Bible study or something similar. They have conferences with a lot of the groups. You can learn more through their website.

Marie Morris, a member of the Memverse Marketing team (this team has nothing to do with money, but exists to spread the word about Memverse and help others get the most out of using Memverse with their groups) is a BRIGHT LIGHTS group leader who is excited about seeing BRIGHT LIGHTS groups and members use Memverse to inspire, encourage, and equip them to memorize Scripture in their pursuit of Godliness and Holiness in their Testimony.

It has been neat to see the discussion on BRIGHT LIGHTS on the Elijah page. (Andy or Alex, is there a way to transfer those comments here?) We hope this page will lead more Memverse members to learn about and enjoy BRIGHT LIGHTS.  We also hope that other Memverse members will join Marie and letting BRIGHT LIGHTS groups and members know about Memverse.

Personally, I was excited to see that the BRIGHT LIGHTS team has been to Singapore and Malaysia (2 countries close to the Philippines and Indonesia where Jacky and I are most focused. Malaysia even shares esentially the same language as Indonesia.)

Memorize "Elijah" with us

Time Posted on December 03, 2011 User Phil Walker Comment 299 comments

Each of the past 3 years, we have had a verse a day world-wide Scripture Memory initiative. It started with HEBREWS, then 1 TIMOTHY and last year's 1 JOHN.

Shortly after the 1 TIMOTHY project began, I got an email from Andy letting me know about this new Scripture Memory website he had made called Memverse. He thought it might be a good tool for people around the world memorizing 1 TIMOTHY to encourage and inspire each other as well as keep track of their individual verses.  I took a look at Memverse and loved it. I sent out an email to our 1 TIMOTHY participants letting them know about Memverse, and as they say, the rest is history... It was a lot of fun that first year to see almost half of the top 100 most popular verses all come from 1 TIMOTHY.  The chart has since been overtaken by a bunch of enthusiastic Bible Bee memorizers so that now zero verses from 1 TIMOTHY remain and only the famous 1:9 remains in 31st place from 1 JOHN.  There are currently no verses from 1 KINGS 17 - 2 KINGS 2 in the top 100.  Will you pray with me that we can get the word out enough about the Elijah project on memverse to change that.  (maybe some day Memverse will extend the chart out to the top 1,000 most popular verses so I could see where others beyond the top 100 currently rank.)

I am praying for 100 Elijah finishers and at least 10 Elijah project groups memorizing together offline.  Do you have some friends or a church group who might want to memorize Elijah with you for some exciting face-to-face discussion, meditation, encouragement, and inspiration the next few months?

One exciting new tool for memorizing Elijah is www.impresskids.com  I have 1 KINGS 17:1 and 1 KINGS 17:2-4 set up in the 1984 NIV, KJV, NKJ, ESV, NASB, the Magadang Balita Biblia (Tagalog spoken in the Philippines) and Terjemahan Baru (Indonesian).  I also have through 1 KINGS 17:16 in the 1984 NIV.  Let me know if you would like us to include Elijah verses in other translations as well.  You can join our Elijah page at http://www.impresskids.com/my/place/101

Any on Facebook can join our group there at http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=673866741&ref=tn_tnmn#!/groups/Memorize1John/

Schedule for memorizing 1 KINGS 17-19, 21; and 2 KINGS 1:1-2:18  (there is no legalism in this schedule.  You may start and end and go at whatever pace best suits you and your friends.)  This schedule is just a guideline and the pace that I and Jacky will be following.

1 KINGS 17:1-24 = Dec 12th - Jan 4th;      1 KINGS 18:1-46 = Jan 5th - Feb 19th;     1 KINGS 19:1-21 = Feb 20th - March 12th;

1 KINGS 21:1-29 = March 13th - April 10th;     2 KINGS 1:1-18 = April 11 - 28th;     2 KINGS 2:1-18 = April 29th - May 16th

then if you are ages 7-18 take a short break and get ready for the 2012 National Bible Bee  www.biblebee.org

Current known ELIJAH memorizers:  If you are no longer memorizing ELIJAH or are listed twice, please let me know.  Also let me know if you are aware of people memorizing with us who are not on this list.

Please pray for people in this group.  Pray that God might grant us strength, endurance, motivation and discipline to keep memorizing.  Pray even more importantly, that the Scripture might be powerful in our lives and that God may be pleased on our meditation on His Truth through this project.  Less importantly, but still worth praying about, you can also sneak in a short prayer that those on this list not on Memverse may discover the joy and benefit of Memverse and that Memverse may gain new strongholds of members through the Elijah Project.

I can honestly say that I am more excited about starting this new world wide Elijah initiative than with any of the 3 previous wonderful experiences we had.  Maybe a part of it is simply what is going on in my life.  I got married June 25th shortly after finishing 1 JOHN so this will be the first large Scripture memory project Jacky and I, Lord willing, complete together.  I can't wait to memorize, discuss, and pray over these powerful verses with her.  Any other husband/wife or boyfriend/girlfriend teams going to experience this joy with us?

Secondly, Jacky and I are engaged in radical full time ministry spreading a passion for Scripture in the Philippines and Indonesia and wherever else God sends us.  We want and desperately need Elijah's God to be real for us as He leads, empowers, and provides for our lives and our ministry.

Lastly, Jacky is pregnant with our first child.  As new parents, we don't want to share dead, weak, or hypocritical religious teaching and practices to our children who know us best.  Rather, we pray that God will so change and indwell us that our children will see us literally trusting the God of Elijah to be at work in our family.

I don't know what your situation is. However, I do know that our Christian world, and especially the next generation of Christians growing up needs to know that the true, living, Biblical God of Elijah is real, and is just as powerful, and wants to be wholeheartedly trusted just as much in 2011 as thousands of years ago during the days of Elijah.  Will all the advances and excitement of modern sience, psychology, technology, materialism, entertainment, and temporal worldly success reduce the Bible to irrelevant even if it's true?  Or will we fully live up to the life Jesus Christ died and rose again to bring and live inside of us.  Will those who see our faith in a powerful, living God join Elisha in passionately wanting to know the God who lives in us for themselves as they proclaim "Where now is the God of Elijah?"

I invite you to join us in memorizing "Elijah" the next few months. I ask you to help me in spreading the word by email, twitter, facebook, in your churches, etc. so that all who might want to memorize "Elijah" with us will hear of our support group. Lastly, I would ask you to consider and pray about possibly starting an offline "Memorize Elijah" group for face-to-face encouragement, inspiration and growth.

If you have any questions, insights, or ideas for me, or if you would like to receive weekly Elijah encouragement emails, feel free to get in touch through philjohn1558@yahoo.com in addition to this blog.

Scripture Stickies contests, discounts, and prizes

Time Posted on November 08, 2011 User Phil Walker Comment 218 comments

Julie Alvarez - yes the same Julie who helped spice up our 100,000th Verse contest - has offered some more prizes and discounts in her endorsement of Memverse.  Here is what she has to say:

Hi, Memverse members! I want you to know that I love what you're doing in memorizing God's Word. I want to use my ministry, Scripture Stickies, to point people towards the joy and benefit of using Memverse and also to encourage and bless those of you already using Memverse. There are many ways to memorize Scripture of course but we found that one of the most helpful ways for many people is to have it sticking all over the place to be read over and over! Hence Scripture Stickies! Here are some of the exciting promotions that we have going on right now in conjunction with Memverse:

Each month there will be a new contest exclusively for Memverse users with the winner receiving a free Scripture Stickies pack.

SCRIPTURE STICKIES past winners:

Predicting 100,000 Grand winner = NathanV;  other winners included Carissa; Phil Walker; Sydney Reed; Elisabeth Sinclair and SavedByGrace

November 2011 contest winner = Mommy's Helper

December 2011 contest winner = AstroJohn

January 2012 contest winner = ChosenByHim

February 2012 contest winner = Erika Wenzel

March 2012 winner = Anna Mieczkowski

April/May 2012 winners = ? (Please let us know if you were a winner of the April/May contest with your entry listed on the Scripture Stickies website.)

June/July 2012 winner = Emily Hamilton

August 2012 winner = Eunice Sofia from India (our first winner outside the USA)

Sept/Oct 2012 winner = ?? If you submit an entry it could be you!

Sept/Oct 2012 contest

For our Sept/October contest I would love to hear what verse or Bible story God has recently been using in your life and how. Please share and encourage all of us! For me right now it is the story of the man born blind and the disciples ask why this happened- was it sin in his life or his parents. Jesus reminded them that this happened not due to anyone's sin but so that the work of God could be shown in His life. As I go through trials I need to remember that God's work is being shown in my life as I trust in Him and put Him at the forefront. What a testimony to others (and to myself!!) when this happens. Thank you, Jesus.

For those of you not on our regular mailing list, here is a link to our most recent Scripture Stickies newsletter so you can check it out: http://www.scripturestickies.com/newsletter.html

In addition to contests I want to offer special discounts to Memverse users. Right now Scripture Stickies is offering a 15% discount to everyone who has memorized at least one verse on memverse. To receive this discount, insert the code MEMVERSE1 when you place your order. Use this code to get a great discount on Scripture Stickies packs for yourself or for friends and family! This code is also valid on Scripture of the Month Clubs and favors.

I would also like to encourage you when you reach a special highlight on Memverse. When you reach 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, etc. or your state or church make a debut on the Leaders board, or move up in rank (for example from 5th to 4th place) or memorize any multiple of 1,000 verses, you will have one week to claim a 25% discount and insert the code MEMVERSEHIGHLIGHT when you order. Please list what the specific highlight was either on this blog or by email info@scripturestickies.com

It is exciting to see that there are so many young people memorizing so much Scripture and even over 35 of you joining SavedByGrace in hoping to memorize the entire Bible in your lifetime!! Scripture Stickies will award a free one year subscription to the Scripture Stickies of the Month Club to the first person who reaches 5,000 verses memorized on Memverse, and a free pack of the Scripture Stickies of your choice to all who reach the 5,000 milestone.

Finally, I encourage all Memverse users to check out www.scripturestickies.com from time to time to see new features, new packs being offered or to participate in contests open to the general public.

May God bless you as you continue to memorize and meditate on God's Word.

It was so neat meeting many of you in Nashville.  Thanks for stopping by my Scripture Stickies booth.

Free Book Rewards from Scripture Memory Fellowship

Time Posted on September 29, 2011 User Phil Walker Comment 88 comments

Scripture Memory Fellowship (SMF) is an exciting ministry based in Hannibal, Missouri, which recently has branched out to embrace, endorse, and support other Scripture memory ministries and tools, while still using their trademark systematic Scripture memory rewards system started by founder Dr. N.A Woychuk (originally began as "Bible Memory Association - BMA"). The director of SMF, Jim Woychuk, has contacted us to offer prizes to those who have memorized verses on Memverse.

SMF will mail a free book to everyone who has memorized at least 200 verses on Memverse! Additional free books will be mailed when Memverse users reach 500 verses, 1,000 verses, 2,000 verses, 3,000, and every thousand after that. SMF will give a $100 gift certificate to CBD or the Bible Bee e-store (or other appropriate Christian enterprise) for anyone who reaches 10,000 verses on Memverse and another for every 10,000 after that.

The first one in SavedByGrace's group to memorize all 31,173 verses on Memverse will get a brand new car...just kidding about the new car, but thanks to SMF you will have a library of wonderful free books and $300 of gift certificates by the time you finish.

The current list of books to choose from are:

For 200 verses you can pick from:

  • Valuable Selections from the Writings of George Müller | George Müller
  • Valuable Selections from the Writings of Frances Ridley Havergal
  • Jesus Commands (175 memory verses from the teachings of Jesus)
  • Missionary Coloring Book (John 3:16 in 25 languages with flags and kids in native dress to color)
  • Morning Bells by Frances Ridley Havergal
  • Isaac Watt Biography by Dr. N.A. Woychuk

For 500 verses you can pick from the books above or:

  • Abide in Me (Andrew Murray, Harriet Beecher Stowe, John Henry Jowett, N. A. Woychuk)
  • The Amazing Life of Christ, Harriet Beecher Stowe
  • Keep In Memory, How to Enjoy Bible Memorizing with Profit, N. A. Woychuk
  • Singing Psalms with Isaac Watts (includes Isaac Watt's biography)
  • Checque Book of the Bank of Faith, C. H. Spurgeon, for those at verse level and above

For 1,000 or more verses you can pick from the books above or:

  • Tic-Tac-Know - a Bible knowledge quiz game
  • Spiritual Depression, Its Causes and Cure, with Lloyd-Jones audio CD

This post will be updated as more titles will be added to choose from. Those who have memorized 500 or more verses may claim multiple books at the same time. For example, if you are currently at 1,143 verses, you can receive 3 books (1 for 200, 500, and 1,000) and contact SMF for a 4th book when you reach 2,000 verses.

In addition to the book awards, SMF is also awarding a free week of SMF summer Scripture Memory Camp to 5 Memverse users each year who have memorized at least 500 verses on Memverse. If you have memorized 500 verses on Memverse and are interested in possibly attending the SMF camp this upcoming summer of 2012, please contact SMF. They will let you know when the dates and locations of the camps have been finalized. You will then have 2 weeks to confirm that you want to go, or your spot will be made available for another Memverse member with 500 verses who wants to go. If more than 5 request the free week of camp scholarship, a waiting list will be started. Those on the waiting list who do not get to go in 2012 will get first chance at the scholarship the following year.

To contact SMF for the free books or the free week of camp, or to get more information about these offers call (573) 231 - 0577 M-F between 8:30am and 5:30pm CDT or email smfi.77@gmail.com or mail them at SMF 245 N. Levering Ave, Hannibal, MO 63401 or stop in person to the Hannibal headquarters or see the SMF booth at the Bible Bee Nationals in Nashville in November, or home school fair in your area.

Below is the current plan of locations and dates where SMF expects, Lord willing, to have a Scripture Memory booth.  At several of these, they will also be running Scripture Memory workshops.  If you are interested in giving a quick testimony of the positive impact memverse and/or the Bible Bee has had on your life and/or on your family, please get in touch with Jim Woychuk of SMF

Memory Verses - the Entire Bible?

Time Posted on August 03, 2011 User Phil Walker Comment 130 comments

A group of Memverse members, led by SavedbyGrace, have started a new Scripture memory group committing to memorizing the entire Bible in their lifetime!  Wow!!  What a great goal and use of the mind and life God has given us.  It is exciting to see the impact the National Bible Bee is having on so many young people in the USA.  May God's blessings be on the group as you get to know the Living God better and better through His Word and as you commit to keeping these Bible Bee memory verses for the rest of your life and even adding more in your pursuit of memorizing the 31,103 verses in the Bible.  I have never met anyone who can quote the entire Bible and will be thrilled to be praying for each member of this group as you proceed.

We at Memverse want to encourage you in any way we can.  If you want to join this group, please let SavedbyGrace and his friends know through this blog post. This is also the place to make any comments about memorizing the entire Bible, and/or encourage this group.

SavedbyGrace or others in the group will be editing this page in the near future to give more information.

Memory Verses in 1 Peter

Time Posted on August 02, 2011 User Phil Walker Comment 232 comments

Rachel, a committed Memverse member, has started a group of people committing to memorizing 1 PETER.  Very cool.  I will let her update this page to include information on how the program works.  When the Bible Bee local competition is over, it would be neat to set up an accountability chart here for memorizing 1 PETER.  It would also be very cool to run a 1 PETER Live quiz or 2 either while we are memorizing or after we are done.  There are now 20+ people in the group.  If you would like to join us in memorizing 1 PETER with the group, please let us know.

The current group of 38 members =

1 Peter Memorizers

-- Rachel Crosswhite (me); SavedByGrace; Bethany (Bible Bee); Phil Walker; Matthew Minica; Josiah DeGraaf; Marie Morris;

-- Eunice Sophia; BibleBeeJunior11; Ranch4Christ; Rachel; Simeon; Carissa (BB); Alex Watt; Kaitlyn Vredevoogd; RyanV;

-- AmyV; NathanV; vburk; BrookeNicole; Sarah (Bible Bee); Zachary Baas; Sara Kenyon; Hannah Teeters; Emily; Lydia;

-- Sarah Stelzl; Jonathan Staddon; China Dennington; God's Little Child; Clay Dennington; Daniel Dalton; Jo B; Elessar;

-- Alethea Leonard; Kerestel Leonard; Monica Duitsman, Christian A

Please let us know if you no longer want to be listed or if you were listed twice by mistake.

Please be active in praying for members in the group as we take in this exciting book.

We don't want to accountability chart people to death.  However, we also want to give an outlet for people who are memorizing 1 PETER.  Group leader "Jesus Paid it All" has set Jan 31st, 2012 as a target date to finish, giving time to Bible Bee Finalists to finish after Nashville.  However, people are welcome to keep memorizing and declaring after that date.  There are 105 verses in this awesome book, so we will make each declaration = 5 verses.  We will welcome and post single, double and triple declarations as we understand that some have already been memorizing 1 PETER.  We ask you to refrain from declaring more than 15 verses at once, but rather return back for future declarations.  Declarations can be made from any parts of 1 PETER since we know some are not starting with 1:1.  We would love for you to join us!! Can we, Lord willing, get all 37 on, or better yet to eventually complete this chart?

Sample declarations = John D   IL   Set A = 1 PETER 4:1-5 = 5 verses; or  Frank J   NM   Set A, B, C = 1 PETER 2:3-17 = 15 verses or my first declaration of Phil W   IND   Set A,B = 1 PETER 1:13-20; 2:9-10 = 10 verses

1 PETER Accountability/Encouragement chart: Each declaration = 5 verses

State Competition

Time Posted on March 20, 2010 User Phil Walker Comment 116 comments

Congratulations to GA for being the most recent addition to the state competition.  Is your state listed?  It takes 3 !!  Why not find two other people from your state to join and start representing as well as inspiring others from your state!  Can anyone top CA?  They currently have a sizeable lead.  However, with the summer Bible Bee and the Lord willing, partnership with Scripture Memory Fellowship, that lead may be in jeopardy.  Congratulations also goes out to NY who jumped up from 9th to 7th place.  Wow!  There must be some Scripture enthusiasts on fire over there.  What is your prediction for when we get ALL 50 states represented?

Remember to encourage your friends to join the state competition by listing it on the Profile page and "update profile" .

Ten Million Memory Verses

Time Posted on January 04, 2010 User Andy Comment 19 comments

Some of you might have received the message from Phil about the campaign to memorize 10 million verses in 2010. To that end, we will be starting to track the total number of memory verses that are classified as 'Memorized' here on Memverse. You will see a new tab under the 'Leaderboards' section called 'One Church' which links to a graph of the daily number of verses that are being learned and that are already memorized, as well as the number of active users on Memverse.

As of today we have 2,672 verses memorized so we have a way to go! The graph is currently updated once a day but I'm hoping to have a counter somewhere on the website that will be updated continuously. Either way, I think it is a great goal for us all to work towards. If you're thinking of a goal for yourself, definitely set your sights high!

The Church Memorization Challenge

Time Posted on December 02, 2009 User Andy Comment 23 comments

There is a new link under the home tab to the Church/Group Memorization Challenge. Any group with three or more members can participate. (I agree that there is strong scriptural support for allowing groups of two to participate but our measly server has protested and for now you have to get two other people to join you to participate.)

Don't feel that you have to limit yourself to a formal church or group. Feel free to be creative. Start a family group, give your small group or bible study a name and memorize together, or just get a few friends with a heart for knowing God's Word.

Currently your score will simply be the sum of the verses that any active group member has memorized. I realize that this strongly favors larger groups but we'll leave it that way for now as an incentive for people to recruit others to join them. With time, we will probably tweak it so that groups with around eight members can still feel as though they have a chance.

Most importantly, keep it friendly and have fun!

Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below. Nothing is chiseled in stone yet.
